Hi.
Took the engine out of my car today. Wow what a fight!! Nearly every single nut and bolt was either seriously tight all the way off or rounded nut head!! What a pain in the bum!
I left the gearbox in and removed the front panel that holds thr bonet up.
Also i had to grind the front bumper off as it was welded on....
To top it off the engine crane I borrowed sunk quite fast. But the engine is out. Thank god!!
I do have a quedtion..... took the engine out and have found the front oil seal ****ing out on the gearbox. Is this a job easily done in situ or is it worth taking the gearbox out to do it. Which will make fitting thr engine a little easier once rebuilt.

I think you may need to slide the gearbox back a bit to give more access (I think, I did mine with engine on the stand so have never done it in situ), but it would be easiest with it out I would have thought. If you take it out, you may as well fit a new clutch while you're at it :)

Im guessing the crane was on grass/ rough ground? Did you put a board underneath the crane? That normally helps stop them sinking

you can remove front cover and replace seal quite easily ,the seal goes hard ove the years and doesnt seal, but be careful niping the bottom 3 bolts up

The crane was on concrete but I found when the crqne is under alot of load it must just let oil past the valve and Let's the engine to the ground....
Yeah need to look at the clutch.

May be a silly question... Why would I need to just nip up the bottom two bolts carefully?
