What’s the correct bonnet and spare wheel mount for my ‘72 series 3

Evening all. New on here and my first post.

LOVE landys and had many but this 72 series is the oldest yet. I love it. It’s solid.

I just can’t get my head around the bonnet/spare wheel mount combo? I’m taking roof and door tops off etc and want to fold windscreen. What bonnet should it have as I have what is called a razor I believe?

it’s got a home made thingy to hold the spare but it’s ugly and not as LR intended. If I mount a pie dish on this bonnet which has the long reinforcements underneath not the sideways short braces as well will it work? I’m aware there is a ‘recessed’ bonnet to accept the spare but is it in newer series? Then If I don’t have the recess in the bonnet will the bolts and clamps on an original pie dish (which aren’t cheap!!) be long enough to secure the spare.

tad bewildered. Want to do it right. And advice and or parts welcome!

That is just about the ugliest home made holder I have ever seen.
The pie dish holder worked fine on my old 88 but there were 4 large rubber grommets that supported the tyre as well. Both razor and round nose are seen on Landy's of that era but I recon round was more common on LWB 109's.

Yep. It’s ugly alright! Thanks for your advice. So you’d mount a pie holder to this bonnet with grommets and it would work/be correct??

That plate looks like the military one but cut down a bit. Mine has one (its ex mil) with a matching doubler on the inside. My bonnet is rounded edge ("De-lux") with a dished centre and there's a very good chance the set up is orginal from 1970 The studs on mine were very long, i suspect it was to put the wheel on outside up. I cut them down (as I think yours are too) to mounit the wheel inside up.

On my 69 2a SWB razor bonnet that is exactly what I had and it worked fine.
Made a good seat in the wheel while shooting rabbits and foxy at night although on one occasion we hit a hidden hole in ground and I bounced right out

and came back down on the wing, just hung on thanks to the wing mirror stalk.

The original pie dish will be fine as long as your wheels are standard.If wide wheels you will need longer bolts and different brackets as the dog leg pieces will not be long enough. Have a flat alloy plate holding my wheel down to bonnet.

I've tried to find some images of the type of plate you have as a number of us have them - but fixed directly to the bonnet. They seem to be unique to the military - the studs are very long, around 6-8", I cut mine down as there was so much un-used thread and getting the wheel over them was a challenge, which is what makes me wonder whether they were to hold the wheel valve side up. The images of military Series I could find had the dish mount which puzzles me as they were clealry fitting these steel plates and studs too.

Thanks very much. I’ve decided to unbolt the military one and sandblast and powder coat it as it seems there is some originality to it and that’s what I’m keen to keep. I intend to leave the spare mounted anyway so won’t see it! Thanks for all your help.

The kits vary as has been said because of the stud length, but the mix is similar ...
