Stand by for an update, if you are interested that is.

The bottom end was a total loss with bad scoring in one of the cylinders. So sent the heads away for a skim and rebuild got a bottom end in pulled the sump cleaned the oil pump and rebuilt it. My mate John must take all the credit for the work and saint for a lone of the very expensive locking tool.

Not THE John got a new motor? Well done John.;):D

I know at least three of the cylinders are compromised but I am interested in the options of liners to try and overcome the problem of these engines being scrapped with any cylinder wall damage.
i am currently investigating Alusil liners rather than the iron / steel options they seem to have their problems, in particular the need for different pistons and rings to stock that run in the Alusil.
if i can overcome the cylinder issues then there is a chance of some form of blower (Not like Alan)

Bore the liners out and use a Plasma spray bore coating ;)

Educated - on paper maybe .. and even then there isn't a great deal of paper.
There are not many options to repairing one or all of the cylinders that i can see so far Ant, but i do like a challenge.
There are iron liner kits available for the engine from the likes of Vac and also i have been given a link to a site that offers a liner and piston kit that looks interesting. Your image is probably the Vac liners as they offer the truncated type for where the liners are next to each other.
http://www.maxsilpistons.com/engine_rebuild_kits.html

i have also found a source of Alusil liners for repairing a singular cylinder or multiples but from what i can tell not a complete block where iron liners are recommended.
So far i have found as many references to iron not working due to thermal expansion of dissimilar metals to iron liners not being recommended due to the stock pistons and rings not being suitable to run in iron or steel.

i have also looked into cylinder recoating briefly.

Also some of the kits are great if you want o build a 600 BHP engine to run twice around a drifting circuit and then rebuild.

To say this is a head feck is an understatement but the engine complete with heads and all vanos units cost me £123 delivered, it is not a massive investment in the whole scheme of things if it all goes tits up and at least this way i still get to drive mine while i am in the process of messing this one up :)

Andy you are an educated man, I trust you have seen how close the bores are on the M62, and also have knowledge of the Nikasil issues with the early M60's?

Looks like a recipe for disaster to me!!

I'm surprised there isn't a cracking problem!!
