And can't solve the drain on the 4.0l P38!!!

The 2 week old battery is only reading 430amps now rather than 550, there is a 600mAmp drain, no fuse or relay problems, none of his diagnostics would read data from the truck and it would appear it's a body control issue which doesn't sound cheap.

My LR experience is not proving to be a great one so far :confused:

Pulled all the fuses from both boxes and the relays....the body control one was what identified the issue but couldn't read the diagnostics as the VIN didn't match so wouldn't communicate withe the truck

What do you mean by only reading 430amps and how was it measured?.Dont quite understand this.
What did the VIN not match with.If the diagnostic machine he used is linked to a specific VIN,then how did he expect it to read from your VIN in the first place:confused:
 
He was going to read up online and give me a call. Because the unit wouldn't talk to the diagnostics he said there was little point in going to main dealer and to be honest my bank balance agrees! Just been googling BeCM repairs and doesn't look cheap! May be time to evaluate breaking her although really don't want to....

Measured the output of the battery...not sure how but gave me a read out from the tester.

He plugged into the socket under passenger footwell but apparently the LR diagnostics software needs vehicle VIN?
 
Been here very recently with a mates P38 DT. It may be totally different but worth mentioning.
Auto elec tried everything but found no faults, tried 3 batteries over a period of about 2 months. Anyway just on the off chance a stuck a cheap tester on the m8 stud on the alternator and the reading was just a little flickery. Got it tested at the local garage and he found that if you put the tester on the stud itself the reading was ok, but on the crimp or cable it was fluctuating.
Anyway long story short, nipped to Emmotts, picked up a second hand alt and it's not missed a beat since.

Everyone ive talked to said it can't be the alternator because it drained even when stood, but it has cured the problem 100%:D
 
The read out was as follows;
Volts. 12.50
Measured. 453A
Rating. 550A

Starter test. Normal. 9.95v
Charging test. Ok. 14.47v

Battery was fully charged and put back in this morning, three hours before the guy turned up

Dont follow his logic in doing what he has done.To find the drain individual items have to be disconnected until the drain ceases.The BECM controls many systems and each system should be disconnected before condemning it.
One of the items that has been responsible for current drain is the CD changer.Did he check if the BECM went into sleep mode?
 
There is no factory CD unit

He couldn't check anything as it wouldn't communicate. Testing the fuses/relays identified the BeCM but couldn't diagnose what it's problem was....

Well you do not need diagnostics to find a current drain.Just a logical approach to elimination of systems not causing the drain until the culprit is found.A BECM sleep mode test does not require the use of diagnostics either.

How would you test the sleep mode, is it something a rank amateur like me could do?

Next to the gear selector is a LED.When the RR is shut down this light after a delay should extingush and remain extinguished.If it does not extinguish or extinguishes and then shortly comes back on again something is either preventing it from going to sleep or wakening it up again.When the light is out the battery drain should drop to 30ma.
The light is fairly dim .so best to do test in low ambient light conditions.You can remain outsite the RR and observe the light through the window.

Just sat in the truck, very still, for about three minutes -which is harder than you think! - and the dim red light didn't go out so guess the BeCM isn't going to sleep? What things does this control that I can check?
 
Nothing appears to be problematic with the alarm, fob works fine, RF receiver replaced recently from main dealer.

Just been reading up on BeCM problems (wish I hadn't!) and my heated seats don't work, the rear demister doesn't work and the rear wiper went into overdrive last week. The headlight units have been changed with built in HIDs which give a beam failure message all of which seem to be things controlled by the unit....
