I've been in contact with the seller, who assures me (and I'm certain they are telling the truth) that all is OK, the only faults with the car are as described. :)

I'm sure I'll be using this sight if and when those little problems start to manifest themselves, but am used to it with my old Saab 900 Classic. If truth be told, I rather enjoy these forums! :p

Just realised that you'll see how much I paid for it! :eek: Honesty still appreciated! ;)
 
Just had a look, doesn't look bad at all for the money as long as everythinhg is ok as he as said! MOT cirts and service history are a very good sign cause a well serviced 300 tdi will easily see out 200,000miles. Good luck and happy motoring from a fellow disco owner

Think you got a bargain there.
Expect to spend a few quid on it to get it 100%, its still cheap enuff. I think you can buy repair panels for the dashboard problem.
There was a 94 plate 300tdi in the autotrader last week a damn sight more expensive than this one.... £6k & it looked no better in the pics !

Yep, dashboard problem needs to be fixed, so i'll be searching this site for good fixes!

Picked the car up today, absolutely wonderful! The car I test drove on sunday had a rather alarming whistle from the turbo (when it kicked in) but this car, the noise was barely noticeable. Which is correct, whistle or no whistle? :confused:
 
You did not mention if it had any rust spots on it, lift the rear seats and lift the load area carpet, also on mine i found rust on the wheel arches in the engine compartment and a hole in the body work where the drivers side wheel arch joins the under side (where you feet sit when driving if you could see it from the inside) a local repairer want £100 to do the hole! :(

I haven't had time to check yet, but if the exterior condition is anything to go by, I've got no worries! :)
 
Can anyone tell me how often the oil should be changed on my 2001 TD5?
I've been advised every 6000 miles- but is this so? And should it have the filter changed at the same tyime?
And..... as I spend a lot of time in France, and travel throught the south east freequently, can anyone suggest a decent Land rover independent who can do servicing in Kent or Hampshire?
French LR garages are not confidence -inspiring.

Dont know how often you are supposed to change the oil, but 6000 is probably a very good idea and will help keep the engine in tip top condition. After all, it's quick, easy and pretty cheap too. How ever often you decide to do it, never change the oil without changing the filter as dirty oil remains inside the filter and will spoil the clean oil.
 
Ta very much - now all I need is a decent garage in the south east.
My advisor(an engineer mate) told me one big difference between diesel and petorl enghines is that diesel fuel dissolves into the engine oil....!!!
which apparently cuts its efficiency.
As I'm driving the disco at high speed between the middle of France and London on a regular basis, I reckoned oil maintenance would be important.
And at 72 p a litre in France, I'm not complaining about fuel prices. I even manage to fill it up in Boulogne, and make it last the trip home.....

If you're driving at high speeds on long journeys then changing the oil is particularly important as it will degrade quicker under those conditions. In that case, definitely 6000 mile changes.
I wouldn't bother finding a garage just to do frequent oil changes, as it will still be relatively expensive. You can do it yourself very easily and fairly quickly, and you should be able to do it for no more than about £15 (£10 oil, £5 filter). With practise you'll be able to do it within a couple of hours (including tea breaks!)
 
Even more good advice, thank you. However, my days of crawling about under cars are long gone, adn I'd prefer to have someone competent todo it, even if it costs more.
inthe 70's I owned a cooper s, and that needed continual maintenance, which put me off for life.
The search for a garage in the south east is not just to have the oil changed, every street corner garage in France does a vidange(oil change) very cheaply. I need an independent who can do a thorough service, recommended by someone who has used trhem and is happy about it.
Perhaps I'll buy a book and see how difficlut it is- any recommendations?

Where can you get the oil and filter for £10 & £5 respectively? :confused: I'm also looking for transmission oil for my auto box, so your 'outlet' might save me a lot of money! :)
 
You seem to have bought an early 300Tdi like me. I was lucky enough to have a mate who is a car dealer. I paid £2500 but he had it in the Autotrader for £3000. Mine had lots of reciepts. Past Tax Discs MOT etc. However it is a 12 year old car. Lots of other Cars are scrap by that age. Mine had two bad shocks at the rear. and needed a few bushes. So I decided to get a full suspension kit and polybush it. What a difference. Handles like a new car. I went for a 1" drop as I will mainly be using it for towing and the odd farmers field. I had a dash repair kit fitted. Famous Four would only fit as the amount of wiring beneath means a screw in the wrong place could damage the wiring loom. After seeing it fitted. I can see their point. They also supplied and fitted the suspension kit. I had enquired locally about getting it fitted. I got open ended labour quotes. and told at least 3 days. Famous Four done it in 1 day for a fixed price. What a difference.

Needed a few other bits. Swivel and Front Discs. But it is a great work horse. I run a bouncy Castle Hire Business. I can now tow a bigger trailer. Which means more money. I also run on Biodiesel. I will need to make some modifications for the winter. But with Biodiesel it is cheaper to run than the Scenic I had. Insurance was only £10 more a month. So I am really happy.

Thanks for the info, could you just expand on the 'famous four' bit? I'm going to order the dash repair kit, and am now a bit worried about hitting the loom when I fit the kit. :eek:

Hi Tony,

I would remove the radio and make sure you can see behind what you are screwing into. If you open the fuse cover and trim on the passenger side of the dash you should be about to see underneath were you are screwing in. Famous Four are a Company in Louth that do Land Rover Servicing and parts see there website. www.famousfour.co.uk. I have had mine polybushed and there suspension kit fitted. Very helpful and tlak plain english. I have seen the kits on the web. But can't remember where.
