Welding !

Hi,

anyone fancy giving me a quote on some welding on my 1995 discovery, namely rear arches and boot floor.

I've bought the replacement panels for the arches and even went as far as buying a welder and gas but then decided that the job was too big / beyond my abilities.

I'm in the North Manchester area, I have a welder / gas and wire that can be used.

Just off the M60, J21,

I had intended to sell it as is, but i've been getting some astronomical quotes on other cars, (it seems that my no-claims has lapsed since i've been insured with Lancaster insurance), so I reckon If I can't sell this I might as well get it fixed and keep it, hopefully within the next month or so.

Do it yetself!! I never welded before in me life, then bought a disco and borrowed a mig. Will prob take some time to pick it up but you'll soon get used to grinding away at the initial ugly welds!!

That was the original plan, but the more I looked at the rust the more daunting it seemed to take an angle grinder to it, I managed to produce some acceptable welds on nice clean shiny metal working on a bench, but figured that old rusty metal at different angles would be a different matter.

replace boot floor £150. i assume you mean the half arches under the rear door ?
50 quid to put them on.

im on junction 28 on the M1.

some one else on here asked me to do a boot floor and didnt bother to get back in touch after i had payed for parts to be fabricated, dont say you want it doing then dont bother to let me know youve changed your mind, my time is to important to waste on letdowns.

if you get the parts ill do it
any welding i will do at a decent price. including replacing sills
one thing i wont do is buy parts for any one after the last w*nker on here told me to get parts and have some parts fabricated then didnt bother to get intouch or pay for the parts i bought/had fabricated.

so you buy the parts and ill stick them on
you want paint work doing ill do paint work also

hi i know its an old post but can you tell me how long this took? and what did you do with the sound proofing im currently doing mine and its soaking wet but dont want to take the dash out to remove it

Twos up on that Viv , good job mate . The welding is straightforward enough but the prep and the finish is another matter . Nice to see seam seal and very competent paint work .

Can't see vivnap getting back to you looks like was banned???

Vivnap is what he is, straight to the point and a tad too straight for what most people on here will accept. He is contactable on another forum

Its all in the prep , Andrew ....make sure you cut out ALL the bad metal , buzz the paint off if you are not sure . It will save time later as if you dont you will be be putting in endless little patches as you go - like a good tree , prune hard . Theres LOADS of info on here and lots of pics to work from , especially the boot floor . I have found that drilling out the spots is the best way to go . Invest in new cross members or use some channel , put heavy sections at the rear where it came with useless strap pieces . Take the opportunity to clean and paint the upper chassis that gets revealed and do whatever work is needed to tank top and sedimenter - its a hell of a job getting to them later .

A weekend should see a floor done if you have all your supplies in and some extra steel . Look at the things in the pictures that others use for some ideas of what to buy in advance and what tools to have on hand . Get in underneath well beforehand and soak the seatbelt anchor points in oil , wire brush and soak again .....they can be a real stalling point when you just need to get on and fabricate . Get some cardboard boxes and tape and old carpet to cover the inside of windows and screens when grinding and welding . I know it buggers the light up (but welding is better in low light) and you will need lamps but those sparks burn into glass and dont go away .

Its all on here , dont be overwhelmed by it , once you have done one you will wonder what all the fuss was ....until you have to put all the interior together again !

cheers Shocker bought the fecker knowing it needed welding but then the engine went so its going to be a full restoration project now, seat belt mounts have been a problem already so i cut the Feckers ordered some new ones and also bought new floor supports and the side panels oh and boot floor aswel as an Engine lol, plenty of Hammerite and some etch primer i will upload some pics tomorrow of the working progress. i do have a Question if you can answer it Shocker, i need the Front Sound proofing out of the way but i dont want to take out the dash would you cut it to get it out of the way?

When you say front sound proofing Im not sure what you mean ....the stuck down dumdum mat or what ?
