Welding required

Hi everyone.
I've just joined so this is my first and maybe last post. I've only had my discovery a little over 5 months and put it in for its mot which it has failed big time. Apparently there's shed loads of welding to be done. It's R reg 2.5 TDI auto. I live in the Nottingham area and want to know I there's anyone out there who can do this for a reasonable price. I've been quoted far too much for me to afford and if I can't get it done will have to say goodbye. I've grown quite fond of him as we've had quite a few adventures already in a short space of time. Hi there Mad Hat Man. Thanks for the reply. I have never done any welding and don't have a garage to do it in. There's a lot to be done I'm told. The garage that did the mot do small jobs but they said there was too much for them.

Have you asked the garage that did the MOT if they recommend any small one man band welders in the area. most garages know a few good welders who live on doing this kind of work.

So we have to guess were you are ? Say's I'm in DONCASTER but I'm not ! So how much welding needs doing ? get some picys up so we can advise on whether to scrap it !

Yes I did but they use a garage round the corner. I went there and it was very expensive. Thanks

Perhaps when you post the list you can post the "cost" they told you, it maybe that it is not expensive for what is required.

only reason i ask, is my son has just qualified as a welder, and has all the kit, and we are moving to Northampton area and will have a garage and he may help you out for cheap and the practice, but i take no responsibilitie if he frys your car , if its not to much for him to do that is

Get the list of where it needs welding up & some picys & we will take it from there ! NOT all of us are a zillion miles away ! LOL

Here's the list of welding.
1. Nearside front lower (b post corroded)
2. Body or chassis has extensive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30 cm of the body mountings Central rear lower
3.Body or chassis is damaged, affecting its strength within 30 cm's of the body mountings Offside front lower
4. Body or chassis is damaged, affecting its strength within 30 cm if body mountings Central front lower (from b post lower)
5 Body has a projection caused by corrosion Offside rear ( o / s / r corroded)

I was quoted between £1000 and £1500 to get this sorted. This may be a fair price, I don't know but it was from a fairly big garage. I'm looking for someone who operates as a one person operation who doesn't have the overheads and who could do it cheaper.

both sills inner an outers at least ,theres a few days work

Trouble is once you get to the sills, removing carpets and such-like, you will find more rust and panels that are rotted out. I've been there ... However, if it looks too bad, don't just scrap it straight away, buy a welder, get a couple of lessons and treat it as a new 'classroom'. Learn to weld, learn to fabricate, and in a few weeks/months/whenever you might get it back on the road. Far more satisfying than just scrapping it ...

Mind, you need room to park it up and probably another car to use in the meantime ..

Hi Paul. Thanks for getting in contact. Yeah would love to do that but don't have the room to park up and also the funds to get another car on the road.

Might be better to move this one on. Having a vehicle that needs restoring and not having the skills or money to do it is a none starter.
Most of us buy these lumps because we like getting under them as much as driving them.
