welding classic boot floor.

Hi all,
I need to weld a couple of patches into the floor of my RR classic boot. Do I need to remove my petrol tank to be on the safe side. There are no known leaks from the tank. Cheers, bob.

At you own risk, if it's not coated in underseal and your not near any rubber pipes I would suggest an assistant with hose. Otherwise remove tank

I took Mine out , but I changed the whole boot floor too.

Seemed a bit risky to do it with all that fuel/vapour in there.

I welded a few repair panels from the underside, left the tank out although as fanatic said I had someone standing by with an extinguisher!! If it had been deeper/more awkward, probably would have thought about removing it first tho

Thanks all , though i had not better tell you about when i was welding underneath my sons punto, with a 110 volt 500w halogen lamp to iluminate the area . The heat from the lamp melted the fuel line , and i noticed the smell of fuel just before i was about to strike up again with the mig !!!

Take it out. I was welding up a Series 111 chassis outrigger when I smelt petrol....stopped and found that the petrol tank had become porous and me working on the vehicle had aggravated the problem. When I told the owner he said he knew he lost petrol over time but thought someone had been nicking his fuel!!!

Deff remove the tank. Even if you were to drain all the petrol, and flush the tank it will still explode at around 500 feet per second if you get too close.

besides, It the vapours that ingite and not the liquid petrol. So there is always a risk when welding underneath a car or in close proximity to the fuel tank. Plus the huge amount of amps running through the metal work
