Just bought some box section to make some sliders for the defender, i also bought some galvanized tube for the mount bracket, can i weld galv to steel or will i need to grind off the galv first. never done welding before so will post up some pics when they get finished.
 
Grind off the galv first, right down to the fresh steel. Or even better, get some non galv to make it with and galv it afterward.

I recently asked the same question to the fabricator I usually get my steel from, he said you've really got to be careful welding to galv. It will penetrate it, but the fumes will make you Ill.

not on the amount yu will be welding to make them up - particularly if yu do it in a well ventilated area. read the "welding galv" thread in the FAQ section.

Thanks, will grind it all off and make sure i wear a mask and keep it well aired. if that do'nt work i'll let you know what hospital i'm in.
 
I've had the dry throat, sickness and headaches for 3 days. That was enough to say enough with galv. Milk seems to work but even still, you're still breathing in the fumes - milk or no milk ;)
 
Does anyone else have a really bad thirst for a can of lager after a spot of welding as i don't like the stuff normally but always need lager after a welding session?.

Once you have welded it, give it a coat of 'cold galvanising', overlapping the area you gave ground off.

Too right,made me sick as a large parrot,welding that galvy with fluxcore wire....a little beyond the milk stage ! And yes to the cold galv/zinc primer......ground off/welded steel seems to take rust three times as fast as regular.
