I have my new rear cross member now (thanks Presbrake) I need to get it fitted and did have someone in mind but an inspection of his welding has put me off. My welding is OK for none structural stuff but I want piece of mind that it's been done properly by someone who knows what they're doing.

Any recommendations? I'm only just into North Wales so North West would be OK too.

Cheers Chris, the cheque's in the post!!

OK, I'm a fabricator / welder of 18 yrs with my family business. I don't know a great deal about cars but I have a defender 110 and am slowly doing plenty of jobs on it and teaching myself about them as I go. I've had Landy's for four years now so have learned a bit.

I am going to make myself a rear crossmember and I'd be interested in replacing yours for the experience myself if you're a bit handy mechanically yourself so that between us, we can get her in my workshop, whip up your tub enough to sensibly work then hack off your old crossmember and replace it with your new HD one.

I won't be as efficient as a car body shop as I've never done one before but if you're confident helping then my welding will far surpass any car bodyshop if that's your main concern.

I don't charge a lot, like I say, it's the experience that's equally as valuable as beer tokens.

I'm based in Stoke so I'm guessing you're maybe wrexham way? That's only about 45 mins from me.

I could do it one evening after work or on a sunday. I'm currently too busy mon - sat with my dayjob.

If you want a browse of my work you can check my facebook out if you're on there - I have a few photos of my work on there. Steve Lockett, based in Newcastle Under Lyme.

No problem if you prefer to go to a bodyshop, just thought I'd throw the offer out there. At least with a 90 there isn't a crusty old diesel tank in the way like there is on my 110!

Haigy - Sorry I've not been in touch re- fabricating your snorkel - been off work with a chest infection so am running a bit behind. I'll get you in one evening prob next week if you're free?

I'm much more of an engineer than a body shop person and I've no problem on the mech side, I'm sure we could sort something. Should be able to do it without lifting the tub as there will be no exhaust back box on there and I could bring a plasma cutter with me.

The guy I was gonna use could weld but had no idea about presentation, I know this is a chassis and will be covered in crap most the time but I couldn't live with it knowing something wasn't in line!!

TBH I think the amount of time it would take you to build a really good cross member you'd be better off buying a Pressbrake one, it's rather nice!

I need an out rigger doing too so I'll PM you some details and see where we go.

Yeah, that's me.

I see no point buying something that I can make myself for free and to my own requirements as it's what I do for a living!

Hope you're as good welding to a chassis that's been on the road since 1990!!

I'll have a closer inspection of the outrigger, it might be OK with a plate.

I'll have a think if there's anything else 'we' could have a go at too if you like, all for your experience of course...

If you make it 1 weekend then i will come down and lend a hand.will get it off quicker n hack old 1 off then steve can crack the welding on n then drop tub back on.

Steve managed find a snorkel top that fit the pipe in the end.not a perfect job but it does job.did u ever get a starter motor

Cheers Chris.

Yeah, bit the bullet and took her into Staffordshire 4x4 for a new starter. Sorted my other problems too - all my UJ's were shagged so replaced them but the splines on my front prop aren't too clever so need to replace that. She's running much better now. Side exit stainless exhaust and tree sliders next to fab I think. How you getting on with that toy welder?!

Lowlight - we talking front outrigger? I could do with sorting mine too so I'm happy for you to hold my hand doing yours if you like.

Yeah it's a front. Don't mind doing it over a few weekends if it's easier, as long as I can drive home lol.

Sounds like a meet is on the cards, a green lane even once the snow has thawed up here!!

just a few pointers;)
You do not remove the tub to do a rear x member.
1 there is plenty of room so no need
2 the body is the fixture for aligning the x member so you need it in place.
3 cutting the old one off is easy, sabre saw for the top then grinder down the sides and bottom

Good luck its very easy just unpleasant!

Cheers presser.

My main concern is the wiring loom. What do you do with regards to manipulating it out of the way when cutting and welding?

disconnect and draw it back at the front of the chassis where it goes in to keep it out of the way when cutting
pull it back through, weld sides and bottom on+ tow arm brackets, pull loom back through chassis extension, weld tops on done
