I just thought I would post a few piccys of the roads down here in the Islands, for your interest.

The only proper metalled roads here are in the Mount Pleasant Airbase, Stanley (the capital) and a few small sections on the main road to Stanley. The rest of the roads are gravel or clay. The main Stanley to Goose Green road which passes the airbase, has huge ditches either side of it, which is the main reason the road is so dangerous. Apartently, when they built the road in 1983/4, they confused the yearly rainfall with the monthly rainfall, and built the ditches accordingly. So if you go off the road, you risk dieing in the ditch or at best totalling your vehicle.

In the winter the road is not repaired at all, and therefore gets so pot holed, that it's not possible to go more than 10/15 mph as the vehicle will just fall apart or you will be into those ditches. I used to run a Discovery with jacked up springs, winch etc, but found that if you hit a hole wrong you would be sideways at 20mph before you knew it, thats why we bought the first P38 just to do the road in as it soakes up the bumps with ease while keeping you in control. It still gets quite hairy though, especially when you have a 35 mph cross wind, it's dark, raining and you have the wife and kids on board.

Anyway have a look at the pics and let me know your thoughts.

Ahhhhhhhhh the joys of the open road.....it looks fantastic....but then i don't have to drive it everyday. Are you fed up with them or do you ignore the holes now?

You get to know where the really bad parts are and slow down ready for them. It's the dust in the summer and the mud in the winter that's the worst thing.

The 400 odd mine fields are all marked very clearly and tend to be out towards Stanley and the mountians like Tumbledown and Longdon. Aslo around all the beaches in Stanley where they expected the Brits to land.

Off roading is good here as the soil is mostly peat bog which makes it intersting especially in the winter.

Aparently, the mines do migrate over time. They sink in the wet peat of winter, then rise again in the summer when the peat dries out. I never go very close the the fences for this very reason.

It's not awfully warm here today, there's snow forcast for tonight. Ah Spring in the Falkalnds.

At least in a few weeks the lambing season will be over and we can start off roading to far flung beaches for BBQs and beer again. It does actually get pretty warm in the summer, and with no ozone layer, the sun is very strong.
