Hey guys and gals

I have a weird vibration in the freelander ... it's a 2006 td4 mk1, it only happens when I get upto 50mph upto about 75mph, I have changed the front part of the prop, put new rear poly diff bushes, and it developed about 2-3 weeks after I done the bushes, any ideas would be greatly appreciated, am getting use of a ramp tomorrow, but if anyone has any ideas it would be very helpful

Sounds like you may have answered your own question! Poly diff bushes bring in a bit more noise. So I would suspect that all is not well in the diff department!
Could be worth checking the alignment of the prop and diff (VCU mountings straight across car - they are slotted)
Suggest spinning and listening, changing oil and looking for swarf, maybe use a good thick oil that is designed to reduce worn gear noise - there are several about. If the noise is worse on lock then suspect the diff bearings. (either side of the VCU) - visual inspection and again, spinning by hand with wheels in air.

Thank you for the swift reply, thought it might be the poly bushes, it' really strange as it vibrates like mad when I accelerate, as soon as I lift off of the throttle its smooth as anything ... throttle on it vibrates again, just driven home from Brighton a d been sitting there arguing with myself about the bushes and what else could it be, at low speeds anything upto 40mph its really nice and smooth, and even doing 3 point turns its smooth, but have heard about the vcu faults and read some stuff about them, hopefully if it is just the bushes then I can get some and replace them easily enough next weekend
 
Worth doing the one wheel up test to check it isn't transmission wind up - that would also increase worn diff noise and put stress on IRD and bearings.
 
When you changed the front prop did you check the CV joint at the front - was it new? If this is worn it can rumble under power.
 
Has it got 4 identical tyres with the least worn on the rear? Vibrations at spead are often due to odd tyres causing the VCU to tighten, which is bad.
 
Little update, got it on the ramp last week, changed the diff bushes for new land rover ones, test drive exactly the same, whilst it was in the air I checked all the steering joints and ball joints etc, found a worn track rod end on the osf, just changed both for brand new ones and it' still the same, Andy, when you say the cv joint you mean the one with 6 bolts that bolts to the transfer case? That' the reason I changed the front part of the prop, the rubber had split and was leaking grease everywhere, could a worn cv joint on the front axle cause this? It' starting to do my head in

Nodge68, yep has 4 matching hankook tyres, all with equal tread, I know how sensitive these are to different tyres, so when I got down to 2mm on the old tyres I put 4 brand new ones on there
 
The vibration has only been occouring for the last 3 or 4 weeks, it started when the mother in law was in hospital, driving from Kent to west London every day and a different route depending on the time of day, started to notice it one evening on the way home, thought i was just tired as the roads out of London are crap, but got down to my part of the country and it was still doing it on a smooth road,
 
Can you tell where the vibration is coming from, If from under your seat then it's probably the VCU damper.
If from the front it could still be a dodgy drive shaft bearing. With the wheels on the ground try pushing them around. They should slide in and out of the cups a bit but have no other movement.
 
If you reach in from the front with the car on the ground and push them around they should move a little side to side (in and out of the cups) but not forwards and backwards.
 
Just laid under and the passenger drive shaft is on, no movement really on either cv joint, the drivers side on the other hand feels like it has a lot of play on the cv where it joins the transfer box

There's your problem then. :(
In the past I've used a cheapo repair kit off ebay, cheapish aftermarket from Eurocarparts and not quite so cheap reconned GKN from Eurocarparts. The latter were the best but OEM would be best of all.
