hi everyone. Ive searched the forum for PAS faults but cant find anything that describes my problem. Nearly killed myself today overtaking. PAS on my 110TD5 is fine under 50mph but any faster and it seems like righthand turn is instant but lefthand turn has a lag. Feels like I make a quarter turn before it kicks in and then i end up having to correct it because ive oversteered which means having to make a rapid set of corrections not to loose control. But it only seems to be a problem when making a series of rapid turns once the turn is on its nice and solid in the turn no wobble in either direction. The PAS box is about two years old recon, pas pump is NewOEM just over a year old replaced it on engine rebuild. Fluid looks clean and levels are good. Hubs were rebuilt about 12 months ago so hub and swivel bearings ok and backlash is ok. Just replaced springs shockers dampers, track rod ends and draw bar end last month. Tyre pressures are correct and by the book and tracking was set last week. Have made a minor adjustment tightening the grub screw on the Steering box about a half rotation last week which I thought made it a bit better but after today Im not so sure. On the negative side. The ball joint on the steering box drop arm has a bit of play in it and if I use a prybar can get movement in the bushes on the panhard rod. Is it something as simple as the drop arm or something more sinister

if swivels etc are good id think box, input shaft is one inside another and when you turn its the twist between the two that directs the oil and accuracy of steering

Thanks James, is that thing you adjust with the grubscrew on the top of the box? If so are we talking a bit more adjustment or another new steering box?

no but if you over tighten the top adjuster it will effect how the input shaft works, you should only adjust the box when it is set central either pin underneath or count the turns and whilst rocking input to ensure you only just remove free play

The panhard rod play needs doing for sure.
No play in that is critical for your steering.
What he said ^^
Pan road bushes wearing out can give some very interesting and terrifying results. I would get these changed over first and see if you still have a problem.

Terrifying is correct.
I still get cold sweats when I think back to my pan hard rod issue, only doing 30mph and the truck was uncontrollable and shaking violently. Metalastic bushes from craddocks 18mths old had turned to mush. Fitted yellow polys and still ok around 2 yrs now.

Mine failed one the way down the atlas mountains! Truly terrifying when there is no barrier on a single track. Thankfully I already had polys fitted so was only about 10 min to swap out for another poly when we got a chance to pull over at the next village.

Thanks Flossie and Dag19. She is booked in for the Panhard bushes on thursday. Ive had the bushes sat in my garage for ages but have not had a spanner man enough to undo the panhard rod bolts.

James Martin, how many turns is it lock to lock on a 110TD5. I thought it was 1 and a half each way for some reason but im geting 1 3/4 right hand down and nearly 2 the other way, which does indeed suggest my box got out of centre when I was fiddling with the draw bar and track rod ends. That means wheels straight ahead is unlikely to be in alignment with centre on the steering box. Is there a visible alignment mark on the drop arm/ box as it would be more accurate than counting turns, couldnt see when I was working as Id forgotten my glasses and inspection torch (its and age thing). I will sort that first before checking grub screw adjustment on the steering box

Flossie, Dag I would never have believed how much changing the bushes on the Panhard rod affects the steering. Had it done today and all the slop is gone and she feels a lot safter at speed and is even more precise in corners.
