weird noise

Hi there guys,

I have now had the td4 for a few weeks and it has been a pleasure driving. As mentioned a few weeks ago, I had an issue with the stereo and Mayfair will change it in a few weeks.

Very impressed by it and how economical it is. Not much different than the wifes previous 1.4 polo.

I have notices in the last week, when on cold start or when the car has not been started for a few hours, the car could be on idle for about a minute or when I drove off, there seems to be a woooing noise coming from the engine. It lasts for about 30 seconds. It is not the normal turbo noise, but sounds like a vacuum type noise.

Any ideas or has anyone experienced it?

hi earthling. . . .check yer turbo inlet rubbers fer splits holes or collapsing ,if any of these are found replace asap [easy job] yer got three on your model ,lift up bonnet ,take orft engine cowl front lhs near rad is first one it go's into a ally heat pipe and out of the rhs of engine , these are usually the one that go first [check around the juberly clips ] see if anything is rubbing them ,and the cowl when it go's back . . . .the third one is down by the egr valve. . . . .best oh luck earthling

Only had the car a few weeks. Mayfair done a 48k service.

Hi there,

Had Land Rover Assist come round. They heard the noise and they said it the engine pre heater. It does it when it is cold?

Anyone heard of this? Apparently see fumes come out of the front as well.

this sounds like your fuel burning heater fbh,
they can make a bit of noise when initial starting up and then it runs on after engine is turned off a to do a purge for a few mins,
look at the nearside front bumper, you should see the exhaust and smell the fumes
let us know what you find

forgot to mention ,
i think fbh comes on at temps below 5 deg c,

When the car is on cold start or a has not started for a few hours, after a minute after starting, the noise starts for about 30sec to a minute. I have noticed fumes from the front, but did not pay attention as I thought it was the smoke from the condensation from the exchaust travelling with to the front.

So is this noise normal? Its like a noise going like woooooooooooooooo. then fizzles out

mine has always made this noise , it varies a little , it sometimes screeches but gets quieter after 30 secs
nothing to worry about

Hi there Guys,


Now getting really ****ed off. Put the rear seats down for the first time, and now the tewo seater side does not fold back. Looks like the release hand is flaky and does not fold back.

Any ideas?

Only had my TD4 a few weeks, so pleased the noise is normal, scared me the first cold morning ! cheers folk

So did you sort the problem out in the end because my 2004 Td4 does it in winter to. Its a pain cos it sounds almost like the engine is reving at first a sort of wooooooooo wooooooooooo wooooooooo noise.

Hi mate the noise is completely normal, you eventually get used to it, have a look at my TD4 pics and one of the pics shows the pre heater exhaust "burnin and turnin" enjoy the beast - they are ace !!
