Weird noise from rear

Clutch/DMF & more!

Have had a somewhat troublesome experience with my 2004 TD4 Freelander 1 so far.

Bought in August last year have had the back window motor fixed and the rear P/S window cable in first week - done under warranty

Three months ago had to replace the Clutch, DMF and slave cylinder. Also had to get front prop shaft bearings, a wheel bearing and rear brake shoes replaced. All the work including oil filter & gear oil service for £1340. This put a damper on my relationship with freelanders

Then the front passenger window cable snapped. Fixed that myself following some posts on here & purchased the cable from ozkam (?) on ebay. Fairly easy to do and works well.

Got even more hacked off when at the start of July the fron end has started clunking which is probably bushes (?). Also a weird groaning noise
(not me - honest!) from the rear end when braking to a stop. seams to originate from the passenger side. The noise seams to 'pulse' in time with wheel rotation.

Thing is went round Islay & Kintyre towing a trailer for carrying our camping kit and the freebie did pretty damn well. Steep hills, rough roads & tracks no problem except the noises.

To top it all off the back window is now making the same sound the front window made before the cable snapped - should be similar to front one to sort?

Slightly off track here point of the post is the noise from the rear - any thoughts what the groaning noise could be a symptom of? Praying this is not going to be expensive. raying:

MOT due this month too.

handbrake on the freelander has a tendency of sticking, rear noise could be that or some crap in the drum, good place to start.

Knocking on cornering could be the VCU bearings. You can usually feel it through the floor. There not usually a noise when driving straight. The rubber around the bearing splits.

Front antiroll bar can be an issue. The end stops break and let the bar move side ways and fowl the suspension, front wheels.

Has a wee read through the previous history and the anti-roll bar bushes were replaced two years ago. But sounds as though they have gone again.

The handbrake was sticking for a while but had the brakes freed off when the clutch was replaced, and no problems with the handbrake since then.

The noise from the rear happens on straights and cornering.

I had a problem where the handbrake cable was rubbing the wheel on the offside.

Your clonk from the front will probably be the ARB drop links. Easy and cheap to change. The sound at the back could well be a sticking hand brake cable.

the noise from the rear will be the drums, and crap in them, i clean mine out, but then the noise is back after a few weeks, will be getting a whole drum overhaul at the rear when money dictates, as i'm getting sick of it

Tried to get a look at the freelander over the weekend but seaside and good weather beckoned
Going to strip the rear drums this weekend to check and compare both sides.
Now have a mild screeching noise that disappears when stopped.

the wife's Freelander used to squeal and I just kept hosing the drum out but one day she (the wife) complained about it ,so it was time for a strip down of the rear drum's first one was worn so I went and fetched new drums and shoes did that one and when I finally got the second one off I had a shock, half of one of the shoe pads was lying in the bottom ,it was I though due to the handbrake sticking on a lot , but all ok now

Car went through the mot no probs! Still not got round to stripping rear brakes.

The mild screeching noise no occurs almost constantly. However the noise stops as soon as I put the slightest pressure on the hand brake. Weird!

I had the pulsating groaning noise from the rear on braking, drove me mad. When stationary and engine turned off, press brake pedal down hard, you will probably get a creaking noise from the brake drums. My mechanic friend stripped down the drums and found that the pistons were partially seized in the cylinder. He poured a little brake fluid down the bore and it cured the problem.....for a time. New wheel cylinders were fitted 18 months ago, problem cured.
