WAY OT: Laptop internet connection

So when I'm out in my LANDROVER sat with the laptop in my knee and need to
surf the group (OK so it's a real vague link to get remotely On topic!)

Whats the best way to get the Laptop to surf the net whilst sat in a field.

Wifi? I have a card for home, is this reliant on hijacking a connection?

Mobile phone cards? Any pointers It's all a bit double dutch to me. Just
want to be able to view the net.. no serious downloads etc. Any
recommendations to the most efficent providers (cost / availability)

Also use on the continent would be a distinct advantage.

I use a Vodafone data card. The card is about 100 quid now, and ya
stick ya SIM init, init...

Not too bad if you can live with a 57.600 connection speed. Fine for
pulling up web pages, multimap etc and doing odd little bits of email.
I found it a PITA trying to VPN into the office whilst at
Peterborough, but then again, I was looking at a huge encryption
overhead before VNC so I shouldn't really compalin.

How about a vodafone 3G card? we've had one on test, shame that vodafone
don't seem to support VPN-1 properly at the moment - or is it just our
connection that doesn't support it properly?

Hi Lee, I use a simple bluetooth dongle to connect using bluetooth mobile.
OK for email, newsgroups etc but not for shifting loadsa data.

I've got one and it works OK, although 3G coverage is pretty sparse.
When I get a good connection the 3G is very impressive, but about 30%
of the time I seem to get a 3G connection which is no better than the
GPRS one.

Mine is just a straightforward internet connection and it works over
our corporate VPN without any hassles (though it is impractically slow
at 57kbps).

It is also not cheap to run...
