Hi Everyone.........First post here. My problem seems to be that the cooling fans never seem to come on even though they work by connecting directly to power. My temp.sensor has power (5v) but I'm unsure of the Ohms reading of the sensor unit itself......I was under the impression that it should read around 2k Ohms when cold but mine reads 1.5 Ohms. Basically....is it duff ? Many thanks for any replies.

Hi GrumpyGel.........Its a 54 plate 1.8 petrol. The reason I'm checking this is I am losing water but cannot see any leaks although I did see a small puff of steam (only once) near the rad. the other day ( poss. crack in rad. when under pressure?) Water guage always stays dead centre...never appears to overheat either. Engine runs great...no water on oil filler cap, so I assume its not a head gasket. Think I'm stumped at the moment. Oh..by the way its never overheated

Check the expansion bottle for crazing/tiny cracks around the lid - its often a cause for water loss, as is HGF. If you have seen steam though, its a sure bet it wasn't a 1 off. Are you sure it was steam not dust or something.

Worth checking is the oil cooler in the gearbox as I had this on a TD4 and ended up with water in the oil luckily I caught it before it got bad and drained and flushed the oil and refilled the gearbox & IRD. I also by passed the oil cooler and have had no further issues with the cooling system.

Pretty sure it was steam and I've also replaced the expansion tank as it was cracked. Thought that would fix it :-(

The engine ECU controls when the fans run.

If the gauge shows normal, the CTS is working just fine.
It's very common for the fans to never run on the 1.8.

Sounds like you need to do more investigation, maybe with UV dye?

UV dye sounds like it might be worth a try.........I have a dye left over from when a plumber needed to trace a leak at home. Have to check if its ok to use in a car.

It could be the radiator. You car is 13years old now. Have a careful look at the horizontal tubes in the radiator where they exit the side tanks. Mine leaked at that point low down on the driver's side. A small LED torch is handy to get plenty of light down there. You may see a coolant stain...

Also check beneath the inlet manifold using a small hand mirror and that torch...
