Water Pump Siezed!?

Gents,

I had to get towed home the other week as, according to the mechanic, my water pump had seized locking up my sepentine belt and therefore stopping the engine turning over.

My Questions is; I am currently half way through the pump change and was looking at the pulleys closer the top right guide pulley appears to be locked solid. Would I be right in assuming that it should be able to rotate freely??

I think that is just an idler pulley. Worth changing as part of the belt change, they fail for a pastime.

it shouldnt be seized and should spin free,water pump is driven off the back of the pas pump , turn the smooth pas pump in pic if it turns water pump is unlikely seized

Was just wondering if it had been mis-diagnosed, and the idler is making the belt squeal.

Have just removed the old water pump and other than a little weepage from the drain home it doesn’t appear to be seized to me!

I would say a misdiagnosis is correct and it problay was the idler pulley that’s doused to belt to lock up...

Oh well, least I’ve changed the water pump...

Just need a new pulley now...

Pain that it stopped you but easy to fix,always a result on a landy!

Par for the course with those. The last one I changed was dry as a bone, and almost no surviving bearings.

Good news is, they are inexpensive. From memory mine was about 30 quid.

Might have done a few more if they provided a way to lubricate it in use!

I remember getting on a CAT D8 (a 68a I think?) And found it had a grease nipple on the water pump, built to last back then I tell ya!!!

Just to close this thread up. I managed to grab a Idler pulley from a place near me and fitted it earlier also, I grabbed a new oil filter as the old one was stuck solid and had to get a bit rough to shift it...

Replaced the water pump with a new one as I was at that stage when I realised the pump was rotating freely and found that the Idler pulley was seized instead..

Its now all back together and full of coolant again, ran it up and bled air out. Going to take it for a quick run tomorrow before rechecking!

Probably the most invasive ive been on the old girl thus far and other than a stuck oil filter it went fairly well!

Yeah cat engines, greasers on idler pulleys and fan bearings, yet Cummins were usually absent
