Water problem

Hi all I have a 2004 freelander 1.8 41.000 miles I have had the head gasket changed and I have had a pressure test done on the coolant system and the garage has checked it over and can't find anything but it is still loosing water I can't find any evidence of water leaking anywhere and now I'm stumped does anyone have any suggestions

How many mm's of water are you losing out of the expansion tank every week would you say? Are you getting any airlocks in the system (casuing your heater to stop working.)

Tracking down K series leaks is a total nightmare, s it helps the more info you can provide.

Not sure really but as an example I filled the expansion tank Friday drove say 20miles over the weekend and today the tank is almost empty the heaters work perfectly and the motor run perfectly never misses a beat.

It may come to that, wouldn't be the car of choice but my mother brought a new car and said I could have it for free

I do have a off road prepped disco and I am currently building a 200tdi 90

Sounds like a leak then, not the engine drinking coolant as that tends to be a slow and you get gas too. Have you checked all the usual suspects for leaks; water pump, inlet manifold gasket, antifreeze stains around rad joints? Might help if you reoved the undertray then ran it up to temp to see if the pressure is pusing it out anywhere.

the expansion tank is prone to cracking around the top. it leaks there if it has evidence of cracks.

if you can't find a leak it is most likely that the Inlet Manifold is leaking internally down the inlet and into the bore.

remove the img (check it for flatness as they can warp) and replace the gasket with a Viton (green) gasket, torque this up to 17nm starting in the middle and working radially outwards.

Hi all I have spent all night looking under and around the freelander for leaks but can't find anything what I have noticed though is a split around the header/expansion tank cap is there a chance this could leak when pressurised through vapour

Hi again still having trouble put a new expansion tank on. Not drove it for a week bled the system right thought I had sorted it but today I took it 100 yard to the back of the house to clean it and the back again and the water was gone again

check the hoses, may be a hole in one that opens up when the system is under pressure.

Hi all finally solved it there was a small split in a hose and it was only leaking when under load so even though it was up to temp it wasn't under enough pressure to leak

if ever you need to do a pressure test a simple way i got this from another forum and this is my one made up and use an electric tyre pump get an old expansion cap and tyre valve remove the internals of the cap drill a hole in the cap push valve in to place and silicon inside the cap to seal plenty of silicon then replace the plastic cap and rubber seal if you need it i will do a better picture of the inside silicon


then just fit and pressurize
