Hi all, When I got home tonight I noticed a pool of warm water from underneath the sump. The sump was also covered in water and it was dripping quite badly. I had a look in the expansion tank and it seemed ok so I cleaned all the water off and gave everything else near by a wipe and left it for 10 minutes but when I went out there was a trail of water from a pipe, on the opposite side of the drain plug, from the sump.

Does anyone have any idea what this is and how bad it may be??

Thanks for the help in advance.

hi
look at the pipe it goes into the back of the engine also into the heater if its rusted it will leak. not a big job to change
look at the core plugs especially at the rear of the engine hard to see use a small mirror on a stick they leak also.
good luck

Hi Dopey,

If you've got bright green or any coloured anti-freeze in your coolant water it should be visible in the puddle on the floor. If you can't see any, then it might just be water that's collected on the outside and then run down through the engine compartment. Have you checked your windscreen wiper fluid topper upper tub for leaks?

As for core plugs, I have no idea! You'll have to wait for Jummy on that one

fook orf pikey, a core plug is used to plug the hole left by the casting process
during casting of the block or head they use sand ( i think its sand) to form the oil ways and water ways and any other ways that are needed in the block
when it has cooled down all the sand is removed and you are left with hole that need pluging so you bung core plugs in.
any over pressuriation will take place in the cooling system and that has its own ways to deal with too much pressure same with the oil..

so to sum up, a core plug is part of the manufactoring process not some safety device

Thank you Slob that is much clearer now. I have checked the coolant level this morning and it has barely moved but it was definatly coolant that was leaking so I think it must be the pipe from sump. Does anyone know what this is called so I can try and get a replacement.

Thanks.

If you have got coolant in your SUMP, your engine is wrecked !

Slob didn't have the heart to tell you that, but that's because he's a softie.

Core plugs are also called WELCH PLUGS presumably after a Mr Smith who invented them.

They are not quite flat.

We used to do these frequently.
We would carefully clean the recess where they are to go in, and with a small paint brush paint oil-based paint around the edges of the recess. The core plug is tapped in round its edges till it sits down tight, then given a stout bop in the middle of the dome to knock the dome down sort of flatter. This expands the diameter of the plug enough to jam it in place, and our oil-based paint sealed it.

Never had one fall out or leak.

dint realise he had water in his sump, i just thought he was mistaken about where the pipe was attached to, or where the leak was coming from

I am not sure myself if it is in the sump all I know for sure is that water is gathering on the base of the sump and I can't actually tell exactly where it is coming from. It may be coming out of the pipe out the side of the sump or just running down the pipe from somewhere else I haven't had a great look yet as I couldn't get underneath it properly.

ah mean we could give you all the answers but yule lurn more if you apply a bit of thought and work it out fer yerself... dint get me wrong yule still gets yer answers but it wont do you no harm to have a think about yer problems first.

Hi these are a few pics which might explain what I am trying to say. The water seems to come from the pipe out the side of the sump then covers the whole sump bottom in water it then seems to drip from the drain plug. I have added a photo of where the pipe goes to and I also noticed that there seems to be some water on the bottom of what I think is the bellhousing but you can't really see the drops on the photo.

I hope these help

Thanks

So just to try and help me understand a bit better then and check that I know what is what. For water to get in the sump something in the engine must be cracked for water from the cooling channels to get into the sump??? Is that right or am I miles off???
