Water entering via snorkel

Hi, i have a snorkel on my discovery and the scoop wont rotate much, this meant when i was driving yesterday in some heavy rain and through some big puddles water entered in the scoop and down into my airbox. it made the air filter damp and left a small amount of water at the bottom of the airbox, whcih i have sealed. Am i right in thinking this is not a problem and that the filter will just fry out and the very small pool of water int he box will also dry out? Thanks for your help. James

Just remove air filter and mop up any water in the box with kitchen roll.

The air filter will dry naturally with the flow of air through it, if its really bad or soiled, replace it.

yes it will dry out but all the while you will be pulling water into your air intake.. best to dry it out as much as you can before you run it..

surely there's sommat wrong with the snorkel though.. I haven't got one but I would have thought they shouldn't do that...

that's the trouble with them forward facing snorks - and yer air box should have a flapper valve to allow the water to drain out from

yeh thanks about the kitchen roll advice lol. suppose it is ok then, just will have to dry it every time it rain that much. the snorkel is basically just a tube from the top to the box, i cant turn the scoop round so its pointing into wind when im driving so both air and rain water sucked into the box. not much though.

i dont have this flapper valve. was just a few holes punched in at the front and the rubber grommets or whatever they are at the back

A little water going through the engine wont hurt at all... some radical turbo'ed engines use water injection to help cool the engine when running massive boost.

The bottom of the filter box should have a small one way valve that will let SMALL amounts of water out and must be working ok.

A soggy air filter though could break up and be drawn through the turbo and blown into the engine along with the turbo vanes.

It is common practice here to turn the snorkel backwards in very heavy rain to prevent exactly this kind of thing happening. Can you modify the intake to rotate more?

I am unsure if this affects performance much but it is worth a thought.

I dunno ... mine (300 Tdi Disco) only has holes in the base ... and I bought a second hand one off ebay so I could play with sealing/cutting it for a Safari snorkel (making my own now) and that one also only had holes with no flapper valve.

IMHO water isn't a good thing to have around a paper air filter .. mine's come up wrinkled a couple of times now, hence why I want a snorkel, and it's only a matter of time before parts of the air filter gets into the engine.

replace the filter with a nice K&N, lot better than the paper ones

cut the top off turn 180 d drink some beers and thank your lucky stars a boew wave didn't enter it

my 300 airbox regulaly has water in it, but mainlymore bugs and flies that the snorkel picks up.

Turn the snorkel face forward and you'll get water in there from the rain, turn it backwards and it'll run down the gutter under braking and fill the snorkel also...

it just wouldnt matter if the air box was standard, but it is sealed for the snorkel with silicone, so the drain plugs are blocked!

either way, there is never enough water in there to concern me, but it's nearly always damp around the bottom of the airbox after driving in rain. which dissapears of its own accord after driving a hot day.

i checked my snorkel for leaks. fitted a bag over the top very tightly

engine never stalled all that happend is my top intercooler pipes collapsed

i suppose air must be getting in somewhere but I just cant find where

300 tdi auto

It's possible that your intercooler pipes have de-laminated and become porous!

with the engine running, spray wd40 allong the intake pipes. The engine revs should increase when you get to the area where the air is being drawn in.

So on a standard air box why are there two holes at the bottom?

if I'm right,

on the 200, cilinder air filter, it has a flapper valve to drain the water
the 300, square box air filter, there's no flapper valve

my intercooler pipes are silicone ones fitted by alisport about 10 months ago when I had one of their intercoolers fitted. will try the wd40 trick though

the pipes might be water proof but not air tight (air thinner than water etc) it'll be ok, just check it if you feel too much water has got in ( takes but a second)
