Hi, another new issue.........

P38 4.6.

In this hot weather, and a couple of pretty long journeys, I have noticed a loss of coolant. No obvious leaks other than the overspill pipe on the expansion tank.

I did a 300+ mile round trip and on the ride back I saw the temp going up, but it never went over half way. Usually it rarely goes 1 bar above the blue zone into the white. My car apparently has an uprated cooling system and radiator as it was built to South African spec for use over there, and then shipped back a few years later.

What made me notice was a pop to the shops, 10 miles, when I got back temp was again half way through the white zone, and the front of the car was incredibly hot to touch around the bonnet catch and the metal around the top of the headlamps. Once it cooled I put about a litre in.

Again, yesterday another 200 mile trip, exactly the same. I took water with me on the journey in case, but did not need it. However, I did get about 80 miles into the journey and checked it over to find when idling the coolant was spilling out of the expansion tank via the over flow. Not boiling, not steaming.

I checked it again this morning at home, it needed about another litre.

Is this an air lock?
Bearing in mind I can clearly see a steady trickle of coolant coming back into the expansion tank from the pipe that goes to the top of the radiator.

I love it, but bloody thing.........
Cheers again in advance.
James

hi james, start with the basics is the pressure cap ok,rad even temp all over(cold spots indicate its blocked),top and bottom hoses hot, sticking thermostat, viscous fan ok,drive belt slipping? you state there are no visible leaks, have you checked inside the car for leaking heater o rings? After doing the basics go for a pressure and gas check good luck

Temp gauge must be half way on normal engine temp, less than that u will increase fuel consumption, the operating coolant temp should be at 94 degrees on full tstat opening, check wht they messed up in the cooling systemas u said something about specs.the gauge on mine sits at 12 oclock after warm up.less than that inducates an open tstat all the time and u don't want that.

Get your cap pressure tested.

Thanks all.

No wet footwell on either side.
Viscous fan seems ok, tried newspaper test.
I do not hear any slipping of belts, but will check.
The pressure cap, that is interesting..........
When I give the top hose to the rad a squeeze I can see the water level move in the expansion tank. At the same time there is a hissing of air from it. I checked the overflow pipe expecting the air to come from there, but it is not.
The air released seems to be coming from around the cap, rather than the overflow/spill pipe.
Does that indicate a fault with the cap?

Thanks

Dont know the exact pressure its rated at but you shouldnt be able to squeeze it enough to hear air escaping through the cap
Id think of getting a new one!
under a tenner at island 4x4

Hi, If i was you i would fit a new genuine pressure cap and see if that changes things ! your temp gauge should run at 12 o'clock at all times when your cooling system is working correctly, probably down to a slightly stuck open thermostat.

Never know a waxstat stick open they always fail shut.

doh!

Screw the expansion tank cap on tighter next time.

Now I can not hear air escaping through it...........

Keeping an eye on the water level from now.

Cheers all.

what are you like?we are going to lay down now after all that thinking:dnfnoob::dnfnoob::hysterically_laughi

lol, sorry guys...........

However, I took the cap off after the coolant loss, so the air and the cap may have just been a red herring. Will keep an eye on it, the coolant, not the herring.
