so having had an inspection done yesterday, the garage has told me everything is hunky dorey with the brakes,
today had to drop the wife off in london, start/stop in traffic you know what its like
anyhow on way home,still in traffic I get the AMBER hill decent control, the traction control and the ABS all come on and stay on, the handbook says "a warning of failure" but as I didn't have the hill decent/yellow button on, this sounds weird
would it have been due to brakes getting hot with the slow speeds, ???

theres a post on here about the three amigos, including the part numbers and adaptor lead needed

could be anything from a ABS ring to a ABS pump


best thing to do is test the resistance on all the ABS sensors your looking between 950-1100ish i say is as mine are 1200 and all working fine...

next thing to look at would be the ABS rings there placed on the CV joints these can crack and rust up

or the other way is to Get the codes read and that will point you in the right direction

had an inspection done at garage yesterday, and they said brake lights not working, although the one on spare tyre does, on getting home and parking up, I got the missus to look while I stepped on brake pedal, and all three worked ????

which after your comment, makes me think the brake light switch will be the first check
 
what year is your Freelander
pre 2001 should have a 2 pin switch if this is the case then the switch will not cause 3 amigos problem

best way to check your switch is just lay on your back in O.S footwell and count how many wires go to it

its a 2000 (W), but I'll get the torch out and count just to be safe
 
mines a 2000 ( w reg) and i have a 2 pin switch if its 2 pin dont bother looking down a faulty switch for the problem as the 2 pin switches dont cause 3 amigos only the later switches


id test the sensors by hand if you do have the 2 pin switch. as a multimeter can be got for less than £10 and always good to have one with a freelander but worse case get the codes read look on the landy zone map for members on here in your area with a Hawkeye machine to read the codes for you

have seen a couple of posts regarding this hawkeye gizmo, now as the freelander bug has bitten me hard, is the hawkeye a good thing to have, talking from a non mechanic type perspective, but willing to have a go type bloke,lol

I could afford to get one, if I was going to need it long term (save garage bills) but also if I could understand the info it gives out, plus where the hell would you plug it into the car:confused::confused:
 
the plug is at the bottom of the dash on the passenger side , did the garage have it up on the ramp, if so they might have dislodge the wires for the abs sensors which also controls hill decent ,just a thought
 
The hawkeye is a great bit of kit if you own a freelander and tere is noone close to you with one who would let ya use it for some beers then I would get one if u have a look for a thread I made with my and problem I have photos of the read outs and u will see that it give you a fault code an a description if you still need help after that then the forums always here. Up here in not so sunny Scarborough I only really had one garage that could read my codes and they charged £46 to do it every time so I went to the expense of buying the hawkeye as I have used this 3 times upto now for fault finding I have saves £138 from the garage and it means its half paid for. Shop about you will find it for £270 or at least that's all I paid

The abs ecu doesn't actually know how hot the brakes are. With hdc active it assumes the brake temperature based on time. It is possible that you have a failing abs sensor which is sensitive to the heat of the hub. Stop start driving is very gentle on brakes. Don't forget the brakes fitted to the Freelander are designed to stop it safely from motorway speeds with a full load on board and a 750Kg trailer hung on the back ;)
 
i had this type of intermittent fault with a new sensor.... you need to test all the sensors and make sure the readings are all about the same resistance...

if that doesn't work and they all read the same it would have to be done by a diagnostic machine while driving down the road until the sensor is not reading.

once my hawkeye told me which sensor was at fault when moving i replaced it even tho it was new and that sorted my problem and ive had maybe a month of no 3 amigos now which is good
 
cheers, I'll get the other bits and bobs sorted, and as and when the 3 amigos return, I'll invest in a hawkeye,

prices seem just under the £300 mark, anyone found cheaper?

i paid like £270 for mine a couple of months ago was cheapest i found... saves £30 from most places and the £30 you can save can get an ABS sensor well it can get you 2

what ever you do dont get sensors from Autosense on ebay.

i had replaced 4 sensors on mine and he sent me 4 as 2 were duff... both fronts and i had to paypal claim against him to get replacements as he tried to blame the car and when i bought 2 from elsewhere it fixed the problem.

can only pass on my experience when replacing mine and to warn of duff sensors from supplier and dnt want people to have the same problem as me
