Warning light - diesel exhaust filter

Hi all! I have a 2017 Land Rover discovery sport. I have a red warbing light, diesel exhaust filter full visit dealer. I’ve had this before. I know why - I let the diesel run too low (I literally arrived at petrol station!) last time Land Rover assist came out and cleared it by driving on motorway for 10-20 miles. Found out my warranty expired weeks ago! I’d be £900 to extend!

so question is, should I be ok to take on motorway to clear??? I know running out of diesel caused it (again!) kicking myself!
 
Sounds like your diesel particulate filter is full of sh!t. I believe you can cure this by running it down the motorway or a decent fast road at a decent speed, your handbook should tell you about all this. The engine then uses a bit of fuel to burn it all out.
Don't think it has got anything much to do with running out but I am prepared to be corrected on this, as if you run out then weird stuff can happen on start up again!

Moral of the story, do not flipping run out of fuel!
Also bad for your turbo!!!

Do you do a lot of short runs? Morden diesels with dpf need a good run once in a while so it can go through the regeneration cycle.
So yes take it down the motorway for 30mins at a steady speed, then it should be good.
Nothing to do with fuel level.

I would say your duty cycle is to low, hence why motorway run cleared the dpf
Basically the engine need to be worked, not just thrashed but worked, drive for economy all the time and you will get your arse bitten.

I think a lot us would agree that a car that has been not running far for a while, basically just doing little trips, benefits from a good long run.
It blows all the cr@p out, cleans the plugs etc etc. Each year when we take ours about 600 miles in two days on the way down through France, we notice the difference next time we jump in them! And we don't have dpfs.
So yep, burn all the poop out of the dpf and you'll be good to go!

It's nothing to do with running low on fuel, although that comes with its own issues, and should be avoided.

The issue is you're not using the vehicle correctly, at least not to keep the DPF happy.

Lots of short journeys kill the DPF, as it never gets hot enough to burn off the residue soot. Have you turned off the engine, during a DPF regeneration cycle?, as this will also cause permanent damage to the DPF

Oops. not good news this is it?!
 
You need to be doing 40mph or more for 20-30 mins, so a motorway trip is ideal, choose a gear lower than normal to keep the the up and the dpf will regenerate. Assuming you've got an orange dpf light, of its red i think it needs to be forced.. or taken off and cleaned
