Thats the display on the dash. So I checked it and its still there. I also put water in the rad since the temp gauge was way up. 6 pints! My new to me Disco has a leak! Okay, but the display warning is still there. What else is this notice for please?

:welcome2: to landyzone.

Is yours any particular model of disco? I can't think of any of the range that you fill from the rad?

I'm gonna guess that you mean expansion tank and that you have a td5. I'm further gonna guess that it's a 1998-2002 model and that the rad hoses are pressurising. If I am correct on all the above then your head gasket is cream crackered.

Did you buy it private or from a garage? I'm guessing private.

low on oil
oil in ECU and injector harness (Td5)
common fault for the turbo waste gate to stick on the td5 also
injectors and or fuel pump/common rail pressure issues. (LIKE IT OVERHEATING)
head gasket
look at the crank sensor

Terribly sorry if I upset anyone. And thank you 300tdistu for your answer. Further info which I'm sorry I didn't reveal at first follows. The vehicle is a Discovery from 1996 so its a 300tdi which I haven't had any experience of before. Therefore I don't know what fittings are different from any other Discovery. Yes it has an expansion tank and it was easier to write radiator and it did get filled. There is oil in the engine as shown on the dip stick and of course the expansion tank is filled to the mark, now. Yes I bought it privately. Many do. I had a thought that someone among you would have a list of what in the engine there was to check. Possibly something from the manufacturer. Thank you.

So I checked (the engine) and its still there.

I once had a VW T4 camper. I was going along the street and suddently I heard knocking noises and couldn't change gear. I stopped and opened the bonnet and the engine wasn't there! Well, it was but about a foot lower than it should be, one of the engine/gearbox mounts had worked loose and it had dropped onto the driveshaft, wiping out the fuel pump in the process.

Is it manual or auto?

300tdi's have very little in the way of a management system on them (egr valve). The auto's do have more though (fly by wire throttle on fuel pump).

The reason for all the questions is that landys are easily modified so if you were filling the radiator direct as you originally stated it could have meant that someone may have fitted a different type of engine or cooling system to it.

My newly discovered [sic] local 4 x 4 mechanic asked "does the check engine light go out after 4.5 seconds". Yes, I replied. Well then its been checked and its okay. Thank you everyone.

did you forget to mention to us that it goes out aftet the vehicle has started? I'm guessing you don't have ABS cos otherwise you would've mentioned that the ABS light comes on too.
