a mate of mine been over this morning, he says his disco wanders on the tarmac, he replaced all of the drag link for new mot,but still does it, steering all ok,
car is coil springs alround, no ace, done 110k
what should he start and change?

thanks

I'd try the steering damper. Changed mine to a heavy duty one and solved all steering wobble, wandering, sudden jerkiness etc.

Tracking, tyre width, tyre pressure, tread depth.[/QUOTE

wheel bearings, tyre pressures, wheels on straight, Aframe ball joint?

I had a discovery with 20 inch wheels wandered all over the show had to fight to keep in a straight line.changed all sorts of bits no difference. changed back to standard 16in wheels and was fine.

car is on 16" wheels,255/65 /16 new bf goodrich tyres all at right pressure, tracked up to date, new terafirma steering damper, new complete drag link, bearing all ok, radius arm ok

we were thinking along the lines of 110k, 2004 car!
1. what about shocks

2. bushes, antiroll bar, panhard etc

3. anything you can think of as he is at a loss upto now

What exactly do you mean by wanders?

What roads is he picking it up on, all cars will have a tendency to try and follow the 'tracks' left in the road caused by constant heavy traffic and especially constant driving from lorries.
So if he's sat in the near side lane of a motorway when its happening it could just be him over reacting?

general tarmac, i had a go today, on a dual carriage way, thena bit of motorway, you have to sort of keep correcting it, as though there is a bit of slack somewhere, no it not as it get in the lines of heavey traffic and follows, there just seems to be a bit of play somewhere to wander, it is fooking anoying really

You can take the play out of the wheel with an adjustment on the top of the steering box.

Panhard rod bushes would definitely be on my list to check, so would track rod ends. You said you have checked the bearings, tracking, wheel alignment and pressures etc.

Is there any signs of uneven wear on the tyres?

The steering wheel that is!

we are just on tinternet now,
rimmer bros
he is going to order 2 sets antiroll bar bushes, front and rear
panhard rod bushes,

but what does anybody think about shocks? no leaks or anything, just 110k and 8 1/2 year old?

Shocks won't cause the car to wander.

Radius arm bushes
Panhard rod bushes. Bolt wears the rear of the mount so you will have to look from behind.
Track rod ends
Wheel bearings, this is what causes mine more often than not due to the large tyres
Rear trailing arm bushes also are a must to check.

I agree.. Shocks wouldn't cause it. And you'd know if a shock had gone or was going.

it was more the along the lines of shock bushes, rather than change them, change the shocks! more cost effective?

so far
2 front antiroll bar bushes
2 rear " " "
2 front panhard bushes
2 rear " "
do you think it 's worth getting new panhard nuts and bolts as the car cannot be off road waiting for new bits if they are worn he uses it everyday

ALWAYS replace any nyloc nut! Faliur to do so can result in the nut coming loose with possibly fatal consequences!

I would carry on with those, and if still persists I would recheck all trailing arm bushes, radius arm bushes, track rod ends, wheel bearings etc incase something has been missed!

Wear in the swivel bearings will cause it to wander, may just need a shim or two takin out:)

Shocks including their bushes won't cause any wander. Think about what item anchor the wheels in their respective planes.

I didn't know about the swivel bearings TBH so that's experience talking for you.

Swivels, trailing arms, radius arms, steering column all anchor the wheels in their plane.

should he go polybush or the orginal layout?? any thoughts??

yes i know what you mean, it's just as when ordering bushes and whilst he has it in bits do it all at once, then he has eliminated other obsticles, you know what i mean as other than that these cars are always up on axle stands,
ps i don't want the fooking thing in my garage all the time as poor sod hasn't got one:(

Disco 2 is a different set up with normal ballpoint and no shims, to the Op,what about the tyres themselves, some cheap tyres are shocking on the road.
My own V8 D2 has Michelin boots and is very stable on the road.
