On a 1986 petrol 90 2.5 where are you supposed to fit wading plugs. Normally its the bell housing drain hole and crank case ( well on tdi's any way)
Had a look and cant see anywhere they may need to go. (No holes under bell housing) So any pointers where / if they need them.

Now I know I shouldnt be wading anyway in a petrol but a friend of mine just got a load of crap into his bell housing on a p&p site after sitting in a muddy puddle for 10 mins and that could have been me if I had been leading.

which brings me onto next question. His clutch has now gone very hard to press in after that day. Someone said its probably crap in the bell housing and it will need gearbox removing and housing needs stripping. Is that right or is there anything we can try in the meantime as he cant really afford it at the moment. (his 90 is a 200 tdi)

any help & advice most welcome

there isnt one in timing case as it is sealed ,oil runs in it for chain etc ,back of flywheel housing near sump,is plug for clutch housing ,remove slave and check

thanx for the fast reply very detailed.

quick question should it be in all the time then if I have to remove the slave on the 2.5 petrol l?

I thought the idea was you screw one in then remove it once you are done or is that just later engines ?

thanx for your help

leave it out till you go wading ,then remove after ,prolonged wading will fill housing anyhow there not water tight, unless you remove gear box silicone bellhousing to gear box incuding threads, silicone bellhousing to flywheel housing and silicone slave to housing

I put a tap on my last disco tdi timing case and gearbox
Was a short thing from a hydraulic supplier

My m8;s been told that he could try to use a pressure washer to clean it all out. I susupect knowing the mud at buildwas its proabably liek concrete inside it now.

Does he have anythign to lose by trying this or would it just be making things worse.

If he did manage to do it and clear some crap what would he need to do to get things sorted or is it still a case of takign it all off (200 tdi defender)

that ill kill the fork quick, strip it out.easy job on the 90 tdi.

remove down pipe and x-member.undo gearbox mounts and bell house bolts, also remove gbox and transfer box leavers they have 4 13mm bolts each.slide off transfer box spline shifter and make note of position.drop off props too.
slide gbox back on trolley jack and he presto box off ready to inspect.
you will need to remove passenger floor and transfer tunnel.

while your in there fit a new fork as at 12 quid its worth it.
