Wading kit - without snorkel

That would be why they used the V6 in the G4 challenge then!
I like my 45mpg when I'm not wading!!

Daft thing is, as Nodge knows, I get less than 30mpg, largely because of the journeys I do, so getting a v6 wouldn't cause me much trouble in fuel bills, plus it sounds like a v6 instead of a tractor :D

I drive very short journeys around South London on a regular basis and seem to be getting about 30mpg then, but it goes up she I get my pass to leave London :D

No idea why you aren't getting more. Lead right foot? Brakes binding? Surely there must be something wrong to be getting that little.....

Even my average is over 31mpg. Last tankful was 34mpg, with about 65% being around South London.

I do a big amount of short journeys, as the car gets used for work, I often do like 1/4 mile to the painters, or half a mile to see a customer etc.

But even when I went laning last Friday, on the overall figures I still only got 27mpg, and that included a 2hr drive each way on NSL roads

Oh and my right peg is also quite heavy, I'd probably save money by getting a remap/ronbox as I wouldn't have to plant it as much!

London driving kills any fuel economy!
I used to live in Chadwell Heath, Ilford & Barking at different times & crawling through traffic was a killer.
My main mode of transport was a ZX6R then, the only way I could afford to commute!!

In a Td4??!

Yeah TD4, I've been thinking for a while that I've got some other mechanical problem, so we'll see

I was getting 35mpg with a dodgy VCU.
Now I've removed the prop its up to 45mpg+.
Waiting to see what the Synergy 2a does to fuel economy.

Sounds like something definitely isn't right on your car.

Yeah probably, did a trip around the North East on Wednesday doing a few jobs, but half an hour driving between each one, an hour on the last one, and still only got 28mpg

I just aint got a clue what could be wrong, although have noticed an oil spray mist in parts of the engine bay (I've got silicone hoses and egr delete)

V6 definitely sounds the best and is a lively performer. The downside is fuel consumption which is heavy at best. I average pretty much 20 mpg. In summer it does 20.15 give or take, dropping to 19.85 in winter.
If I'm careful with the throttle I can get 25 mpg at 70. Slightly less if I use the cruise control?
Obviously with the alternator mounted at the top of the engine along with the PS pump, deep water won't hurt either. The cam belt is rather vulnerable though, as is would be on the 1.8.
Whatever engine you have, there will be some vulnerability somewhere.

I know the subject has been thrashed out on this forum in many different threads but after all the flooding some people have suffered this winter I thought perhaps it was a good idea to install a wading kit.

I know we're told the Hippo will float before it starts to need a snorkel, but when cleaning out the rear diff yesterday I noticed what I think is the diff breather pipe.

So...has anyone fitted a wading kit i.e. tubes to the breathers on the rear diff, gearbox, IRD, etc and a manifold to connect them all and at least bring them high up into the engine bay if not up through a snorkel?

If anyone could post some pictures I'd appreciate it.

Hi.

My td4 I have added a wading kit too.

I added to my diff breather and extended it up away from the exhaust and into the rear bumper and fed it up the rear to half way on the rear door, comes out near the hinge.

Like wise with the gearbox and engine breathers and brought them up to the top of the bonnet next to the wipers.

Never had an issue with them, had the mod for two years.

Just bought a snorkel from Manteca swell, though that will be for looks only coz of the alternator.

Breathers can be brought into the cabin for ultimate safety. The diff is most likely to be submerged. LR did turn the end of the breather downward to reduce the chance of water getting in, this will work to a degree, but only if the diff is cold or cooled completely before entering deep water.
It's amazing just how much water will get into a diff if it's hot and is suddenly submerged. As it cools the air inside contracts, this is replaced be additional air through the breather pipe. If that pipe is under water, water gets sucked in regardless of the little down turn.
The IRD breather is already pretty high but could also be extended to the top of the engine bay. The gearbox varies as to whether it's extendable depending on type. The Jatco auto box has a breather pipe so is easy enough to do. The PG1 has a plastic breather tube. The top of which needs cutting off before a pipe can be fitted. Can't remember off the top of my head what the Getrag box has breather wise.

I guess for any serious wading you'd just get a more suitable vehicle! Like a Disco or Tratter.

V6 does sound the best but with the Synergy 2a box the Td4 now flies.
A friend has a golf GTDi with 150bhp & my Hippo edged in front in a drag.
Doesn't handle as well round corners but the Golf can't cope with mud & ruts! Swings & round-about's!!

If I turn the stereo up I can pretend there is a V6 rumble outside but I don't have to worry about the V6 thirst!!

Thread revival: anyone got pictures of their breather extensions? :)

I don't have big wading planned, but belts and braces to ensure no problems if I do... :)
