Well I went to see a 2001 4.6 Vogue today and I wasn't really impressed with the take off, I buried the pedal in the carpet expecting to get shunted back into the seat only to be disappointed. Should a 4.6 v8 beat a 2.5 DSE as the 4.6 couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding!

C`mon let`s have some figures. Being a sedate old fart I`m happy with my un-chipped diesel manual. 0-60 18seconds. 40-70 16 seconds. That`s not from a magazine that`s my car (220k km) last week-end. (on a private road of course). Any 4.6 owners to tell Woogoo what he should expect? Did he test drive a dog or is he expecting too much from a lowish comp soft cammed V8?? Speed/ power / performance is very subjective, and I for one have no access to a dual roller dynamometer.

woogoo if you still going next weekend, i will let you have a go of mine, then you will know first hand how a v8 sould go. i think it was goooooosed, the one you drove..

I do not think you can even compare the two machines....Like chalk and cheese...
Must have been something wrong with the tested V8.
The diesels are just boring....One just can not go withouth the V8 engine sound. If you have one of these cars I think it is daft to worry about fuel cost. If the cost is the main issue get a Ford Ka or a Smart.....

Woogoo,

I have a chipped P38 DSE and a cammed 3.9V8 RRC outside my front door, P38 daily driver, RRC weekend mess about car. They are very different to drive and ultimately if you cane the P38 there would be very little between them speed wise but one thing immediately noticeable is just how much torque the V8 has from down low.
The DSE is glacial slow when cold and even warm needs a good 1500 revs before anything at all happens and doesn't really get a move on until the turbo and chip do their stuff between 1800 and 2000. From there to the redline though its all good.
The V8 on the other hand just pulls like a train from 1000rpm with instant, intoxicating throttle response and a glorious burble. Once up and running it runs out of puff earlier than the diesel though.
Now thats a 3.9, admittedly it has a piper cam but that should only be bringing an otherwise untouched 150k engine back to spec.
The 4.6 is a different animal again and should be a snorting power house. I've watched youtube clips of Yank guys off roading 4.6's and you should see the things jump up rocks and hills on a surfeit of torque.
So I'd guess the one you drove is a duffer.

Yeah, I'm beginning to come round to that way of thinking myself. I'm very, very confident mine could have left it for dead. I may have mentioned it before but on a 'city track' I can be hitting 40+ from a standing start by the time I get to the pedestrian crossing on the other side of the junction.

As an example of the type of junction I'm referring to:

Maps of the world, street map search - powered by Multimap

An I would be travelling West up Marshall Place for example.

Cheers J, I'll hold you to that. :) I know this 4.6 is an automatic and there is a lag while the torque converters catches up, but with that said and all that apparent grunt under the hood I at least expect the back to drop as it growls it's way up the range. (no pun intended).

Well, I assume Claw you are referring to cloth seats versus leather seats. Well it has to be said that if there's a pool of arse crack sweat, you'll find it sitting on the top of the leather seat! At least with cloth it absorbs it, and all you see is a dark line, which could easily be passed as a liquid spill due to the lack of cup holders.

But I get where your coming from, so with a bit of luck it won't be too hot on Sunday!

Don't quite know where your reference to fuels cost come in as I never mentioned it. I also have a BMW 750 v12 so it would be fair to say fuel costs don't come in to it.

Who me???
After the pile of **** I have spent the last few weeks putting right..okay a lot of it could and does happen to V8's..but the oil condition and the clatter of a doozel don't seem the same even though it was chipped.
When I took it back I felt I should have had a farmers garb on, it was like driving a Massey tractor noise wise.
I would have thought that you "Northeners" would have gone for a Cummins engine as the right option.
