Although my Disco warms up and the heater works , just about , I'm thinking of removing the viscous fan . Especially in this wether as I'd like it to warm up a bit quick tbh .

I have just replaced the water pump and have purged the cooling system so no air locks (I think ) .

Would you advise it at all ?????
 
depends on model i suppose, wouldn't want to run a v8 without a fan, whereas a 2/300tdi i would take it off and lash in the back with the spanners to refit if ya need it.
 
Yeah , sorry guys , its a 300 Tdi . I've taken it off 3 months ago to do the front crankshaft oil seal and then again today to fit a new water pump . Comes off really easy , goes on even easier lol . . .

Water pump went Boxing Day while the wife was driving it . I only managed to get a new pump yesterday . . . The sepentine belt came off coz the bearing failed so badly , which in turn snapped , forced off the air con belt . . she did'nt stop either , so I hope she never boiled the engine

We've has a number of 200's & 300's and one of the first jobs I do when I get them is to take off the viscous fan.

You need to take responsibility for keeping an eye on the cooling system, checking the header tank level regularly etc but assuming the cooling system is in good order, all you'll get are benefits.

1. Quicker warm-up, better for the engine and the passengers;

2. Better mpg - I find on average about 2mpg;

3. Quieter running, no fans thrashing around;

4. Better engine access, easier to do routine jobs;

5. Improved performance - a mlittle more pep and throttle response;


I've run our 300's all year round and including towing, without fans. However, the fan is always in the boot just in case and I don't ever get caught out in stationary traffic, where I live.

If you are going to do this, can I suggest that you change the coolant for good quality new stuff and back-flush the rad. Do the intercooler at the same time and you'll improve performance.
 
I took mine off (200), thought it might warm up quicker but it made no difference, yesterday after about 3 hours at a p&p the temp went to 3/4, (it was being worked quite hard )which is ok but I stopped and put it back on before it got any hotter.
 
I did the inter-cooler cleaning thing when I removed the EGR ;). The coolant is a good quality item and she never usually goes over a 1/3 on the gauge even in summer when towing a twin wheeled caravan .

I will keep my eye on the coolant over the next few days as I wanna make sure the water pump failure did'nt cause the engine to cook . If everythings ok I'll remove the thing . . .

I only ever got our last 300tdi temp gauge to 3/4 and that was in the height of summer on the autoroute Going through the mountains from France to Spain, fully loaded (5 + all the kit) raceing a Renault 5 up a steep hill :D

Removing the fan must be a diesel thing.

I though I would relate part of thebiglad's post to how it would affect the running without a fan on my disco........:hysterically_laughi

1. Quicker warm-up, better for the engine and the passengers; Better than the 1&1/2 miles it takes now in the winter

2. Better mpg - I find on average about 2mpg; Only 2, how would I find that out

3. Quieter running, no fans thrashing around; Can't hear the fan now unless the bonnet is open, then is it the fan or the other stuff that's going round and round

4. Better engine access, easier to do routine jobs; No problem with access with the fan fitted

5. Improved performance - a little more pep and throttle response; "Improved performance" thats good that's 'one' of the reasons for owning a V8 but how much, will that be over120mph then





And a HAPPY NEW YEAR

I still don't get this. I may be wrong, but I thought there was a thermostat on the system so the coolant didn't go through the radiator until it had warmed up. If so it couldn't make any difference to warm up times as it wouldn't be in the system anyway - in fact the extra load of the fan on the engine would make it warm up quicker if anything.


Or am I confused over what the thermostats do????? Is it different on different cars ???
