I had big overheating issues, picked up a new (2nd hand) rad at billing for a 10er and swapped em over, mine had lots of fin damage and tons of mud in it! check that on yours

cheers, I think I have come to the conclusion I need a new Radiator, so just sorting out some funds to get one.

Any tips on fitting one?

One of the first questions asked by the guy who is leading our group in Morocco this year was; "What type of fan have you got fitted?"
When I told him I had a factory standard viscous, he said; "Good, you've got the best item for the job. Anything else on the 300tdi's has proved to be a pain in the arse in the past."

Given he's been leading groups over there several times a year since 1982, I pretty much valued this opinion over anything else I've ever read on the subject.

Hi Mark, well I have a different opinion. I took my TDi 300 auto (85,000mls) to Morocco in 2008 for 6 weeks including the desert and had the fan in the boot all the time, and never even the slightest hint of over-heating. It was there if needed, but never needed.

However, before going I flushed out the radiator, renewed the water pump and thermostat, flushed the block and replaced with a strong solution of all year round coolant.

I reckon most over heat problems are caused by lack of maintenance. When was the last time you flushed the radiator, block and replaced the coolant with new?

It can so easily get over-looked, but should be replaced every two years. It's the same with brake fluid and peeps wonder why their brakes feel a little soft :cool:

Cheers
Dave

I did a coolant flush and change just before Christmas, as that's when I tend to do a full check of levels as I also check the level of antifreeze etc ready for the cooler months.

But reckon my rad is on its way out, as had a better look at it, and its not looking at its best to say the least.....

I did the same work on my wife's Def ie rad/pump/'stat/coolant all stuff from Paddocks and all is running perfect again now.

The original rad was flushed, loads of shît came out but had lost lots of vanes and I reckon it still had blockages, but with the new one all is good.

Also put on a bonnet vent as seen on this forum for a bit extra cooling whilst I was sorting out the radiator. ..
