Hi everyone this is the first time for me on here,
I have a problem with my 95 p38 2.5 dse manual at 50 mph and over it seems to me very noisey and not very smooth at all also doing a lot less mpg from 27 down to 21 on a run.
I have just jacked the o/s/r wheel up and tried to turn it but it seems to be locked it will only rock back and forth i have just been told this is not right and there could be a fault with the transfer box. does anyone know how i can find what the fault is before i strip it all out, someone suggested taking the front prop off ?.
Is it ok for me to keep useing it if i keep the speed down to 50 for now,
many thanks,
chris:confused:

you would have to jack all 4 wheels off the floor to get the wheels to spin the viscous coupling is locked in permantly and only allows the front and back to turn indapendantly if a certain break away torque is achieved. You cant run a viscous transfer box without either a front or rear prop as it will just slip. I would doubt it will be anything to do with the coupling. When they fail they look up and cause excessive tyre wear and poor handling not noise.

does running a P38 with 1 prop fook it up then.old series stuff takes 2wd ok.

it actually wont drive it gives the effect of a slipping clutch if you try to drive with 1 prop. a series doesnt have a center diff thats why you cant drive with 4wd in all the time

Its likley that your VC is seized up. You should be able to jack up and turn one wheel with some effort but it should rotate very slowly.

Now if its seized (common problem) I have a box here seized aswell. If you drive on tarmac and turn full lock low speed does the transmission seem tight or does the car need more revs to go around the corner likewise tyres slipping chirping is an indication of VC being seized.

you can run your motor without one propshaft and it will not "be like driving a car with a slipping clutch" at all unless broken.

senerio 1. If its seized it will work ok however you are outting all the available torque through only one diff and pair of wheels Drive smoothly and avoid spinning any wheels to avoid putting too much strain on the single axle.

Senerio 2. Your VC is working when you pull away the drive will goto the easiest route i.e output flange with no propshaft or load upon it. It will turn this until the VC locks up giving you drive. Won't be quarter of a turn I wouldn't have thought and very unoticable when driving maybe a very very very slight delay when pulling away I do doubt you will notice it!

not sure if the handling is ok it does tend to roll a bit but then i have never had one of these before, the tyres were new when i bought it about 3 months ago. one thing i noticed today on the motorway was on the flat or down hill there is hardly any noise but when it starts to pull up any bank it starts to whine from the back seat area it also whines when pulling away 1st and2nd gear ok but 3rd and up whines:confused:

thanks for that will try this on tarmac if the vc is seized can this be fixed or is it a new t,box

I have a box with a seized VC if you need one to exchange until you swap it if you find out that it is indeed seized. Depends where you are really. I'm in Luton/Dunstable anyhow
