Is it true that theres a clutch on the fan so it only engages when the engine is hot? heard that somewhere. I have overheating problems on my 2.5td in hotter weather and suspect a busted fan as it spins freely on the pulley but i havnt tried anything with the engine running as i value my fingers...
how can i cjeck if its working properly?

it should spin freely when cold - the "clutch" engages when it's hot

go for a drive, get the engine HOT - stop the engine then see if you can still turn the fan - if you can it's fooked

mine used to overheat, so i fitted an electric fan on a switch and put a new rad in. since putting the new rad in the fan is not really needed

ye i was thinking of the leccy fan just been for a drive my visco if definitely broke so i may do just that.
cheers all

SO
I got a new viscous unit from Bearmach bolted the fan on stuck it on the pulley and went for a drive. 5 mins away the temp gauge starts reading high again almost into the black section of the guage. got out opened the bonnet to test the fan clutch and it was spinning freely like it would on a cold engine. so now im thinking mebe my stat is buggered. or my guage.
ideas?
cheers

also, and yes this seems a very silly question, but which way does an engine fan blow? back or front? cos mine blows at the block whichs seems wrong but it dont fit on the other way
