violent shaking

Well checked absolutely everything and apart from the steering damper I can find nothing wrong even had my dad and his mate double check everything the only thing he spotted was the power steering pump pulley seemed to have slightly moved as per picture.

As you can see there’s a slight gap between pulley and dust cover of the pump
 
That won’t cause the symptoms you describe I wouldn’t have thought.

Get someone to sit in it and wiggle ate steering hard from side to side (engine off) and look carefully at all joints, bushes, connections in the steering and drivetrain components for wayward movement.

Maybe take that steering damper off and see if it still does it?

Does sound like either a bush or swivels to me.

Have you checked you wheel bearings? I had a loose wheel bearing and it gave some similar symptoms all though far less violently than you seem to be having
 
Replacing steering damper cured my death wobble, they seem to absorb all the little bits of play that accumulate. I followed the same path as you, checking everything and all was tight but when i took the damper off it was only working in 1 direction
 
Checked everything 3 times had my dad work the steering whilst I looked then I worked the steering wheel whilst he checked and Nothing No Play What So Ever!!! Wheel bearings swivels and all bushes are perfect!!!

I’ve got a brand new Old Man Emu steering Damper that I’m going fit hopefully that cures the problem.

Just need get water pump replaced first got couple sheared bolts to deal with first FML!!! Think the rum is going get hit hard tonight

Surely that is parts and fitting? Which bush is it?
 
I say again check front shocks/dampers.To do this properly one end of the shock has to be disconnected and the damper moved in and out by hand.If no resistance is felt in one or both directions it's fubar.

I checked all of this today I disconnected from the top mount removed the turret and the shocks were as you’d expect for shock absorbers with 2500miles on them as is every other component in the steering and suspension all good. We took it out for run so my dad and his mate could see what was going on and sure enough it did it again.
 
It seems to happen mostly on the straight although once today it happened and I tried to keep going without backing off but when we came to a corner it didn’t want to turn! I turned the steering wheel but the Defender kept going straight until I backed off and gently pressed brakes once shaking stopped it was fine going round corners but started again when got to 30-35mph

Think that will be the next step I removed the propshaft today but then I started on the water pump because it arrived and crawling on cold concrete was starting to P me off

unlikely, over tightening would just increase wear on the bearings in water pump alt and pas pump, a worn pump would see leaks and air been sucked in ie frothy oil
 
If the steering is binding up like that then something is badly wrong.

Things to do next:

- run it without front propshaft to see if it’s an axle problem

- run it with the PAS belt off (unassisted steering) and see if it still does it - if it does you can rule out the pump

- steering arms - are the straight?

- take the defective steering damper off and drive without it fitted to see if it still does it?

Have you checked your wheels are true and no weights are missing etc
 
Is the steering box all bolted up tightly and the drop arm to the drag link all secured? If it only goes in a straight line then it sounds like something moving when not under load.
