vibration at 60mph through car

hi there everyone
ive got a vibration thru the car at 60 mph had wheels balanced and im suspecting it could be front prop out out balance does anyone else have any ideas what else it could be
is it worth removing front prop and trying at 60 mph and does diff lock need tobe engaged to use it and how far is ti possible to drive with front prop removed and previous front prop uj went so put a second hand prop on cos this be out of balance if so how do i check it

The centre diff lock will have to be engaged or she won't go anywhere; the power will want to take the easiest route...straight to the flange which is no longer having to turn anything . Not sure how fast you should go in only forced 2 wheel drive - I've got a Disco 2 which just has traction control, for now (need a CDL cable/lever kit ). Hopefully someone with Disco 1 knowledge in that regard may help. There are companies which balance proshafts, but I believe you have to send them away. Don't think any take the entire vehicle, remove the prop and refit it.

You sure it's caused by the front end? What condition is the rotoflex on the rear propshaft (rubber donut!). That's a source of vibration in Discos.

How did your front prop become unbalanced? Or what makes you think that? Could be UJ's, idler arm, wheel bearing giving up the ghost? Doubt front prop would be the cause, as they are balanced at factor and the balance weights are welded on

Unless it's been seperated at the sliding joint....

This is nearly always UJ's. To check properly you need to ensure there is total slack in the drive train. Take out of gear and take handbrake off. Also select neutral on the transfer box. You will have to chock the wheels if its not perfectly level!

Underneath make sure each prop can be turned a little, so you know that they are not being held tightly in one direction. Then obviously check the UJ's for free play.

I write this not to be patronising, but personal experience. I have made this mistake before lol

I have no idea how safe it is to drive without the prop but i have known one driven at 55mph for a couple of hours with one prop removed and diff lock engaged, and there were no problems, just be VERY gentle with the clutch.

Hi Richie, the most obvious places to check (imo) would be the propshaft U/j's and the rubber doughnut. Check for wear and replace as necessary.

Even something as simple as reassembling and leaving the washers out on one bolt can do enough to cause a vibration.
My old disco had a terrible vibration from the rear and it was two bolts on the rear coupling each missing two washers that was the cause of it.

Thanks guys will try what you all said over weekend.....plus tried 2 different sets of wheels and still no different, was wondering if Transfer box had been wounded when prop uj went on orignal prop......
