I have developed a vibration that sounds to be coming from the rear of the disco when under acceleration at speeds over about 40mph.

I thought it was the rear prop UJ's were shot, but I have just jacked it up and checked and they are all fine. I have also checked the wheel bearings and they seem ok to.

Any further thought on what it might be and how to check?

Thanks

James

Slidy thingy seems ok to, James I think this is more likely to be a mechanical problem as it has come on rapidly yesterday and worse today, but will try a quick swap.

So I have removed the rear prop and road tested. The sound has gone away, the prop apears to be ok.

The isue I was having though was regulay, every 10 secs or so, the gear box sounded like it was jumping and the diff lock light would flash out. Sounded like the box was about to fail?

since removing prop or before ,as diff lock is spring operated in box and sometimes lever dosent either put in or out fully

what i was trying to get at was before removing prop it didnt feel like it was trying to jump out of gear didd light flashing etc

This is a completely different description from your 1st post

So before, accelerating at faster speeds I would get a vibration/noise/resonance, sounded like a shot UJ but after looking obviously not the case. Apart form that drove ok.

Now after removing the rear prop no vibration but felt like there is maybe something missing every few rotations, when this happens it appears to pop out of difflock and back in again, I did check the gear leaver to check if it was in properly.

i think there was a bad vibration with 2 props and no diff lock

now there is an odd feeling in the transmission and the diff lock light doesnt stay on constantly, with 1 prop and diff lock engaged.

MY GUESS is that the prop/rear diff was causing the vibration which has now gone, but as the vehicle was being driven with just the front prop, diff lock was momentarily disengaging, which made the car jump as drive was sent to the disconnected rear outpuit and hence the light went out momentarily.

i advise get a mate in passenger seat to hold lever in diff lock position, and/or check diff lock linkage is free and engaging with detent spring properly and try again.

and its stil likely to be that prop

a perfect prop has ujs that move in both directions fully and smoothly with no grabbing or stiffnes, but no slop or play, and a spline joint that slides in and out smoothly with minimal resistance but again no slop either rotationally or laterally.

cheers

i would check out put bearings and center diff bearings by feeling both out put flanges on transfer box, sounds like something in t/box ,output bearings or diff bearings would make it feel that way and even worth checking front prop
