Hi all, quite new to this , ihave a 300tdi auto , serviced regulary and owned from new . its coming up to 12years old and i have only done 45,000 miles, recently my mpg has dropped drastically down to around 20mpg probably less on this last fill up, any ideas as what could be wrong ? I have checked the tyre pressure changed the air filter and fuel filter still no joy,,,, I need help as Mr browns mob are already cleaning out my walet with fuel charges i don`t need my landy doing the same....

suggestions welcomed

Did you change the filters yourself? Did you remember to clean out the sedimenter bowl at the back of the bulkhead? If you haven't already done it you can also remove your egr valve and clean out your intercooler. A bit of injection cleaner additive to your fuel should also help.

Hi there, is there any smoke, if yes, what colour and when. Is there any loss of power? Can you see any diesel leaking from anywhere and dripping onto the road?

Cheers
Dave

thanks for the replies.
Yep i changed the filters myself. i will look for the sedimenter bowl and clean out the inter cooler, thankls for that,
second reply,, no visible leaks or smoke , the only smoke is on start up but that normal and has always done it. doesn`t seem to be any loss of power at all still pull very well, any other suggestions welcome...

thanks a little bit less stumped

I'm struggling to think of what else to suggest.

Has this just started after a fill-up with bad fuel?

Do you have any brakes binding?

I`ll check the brakes out and see if they are acting ok...
fuel wise i have tried 2 different garages and the same result so no bad fuel..

working on it

hi swampthang
I used to get a good 30 to 33 mpg even more on a long run so its poor by my standards

Have cleaned all the brakes now and cleaned the intercooler, boy thats a job outside in the cold , ouch my fingers hurt, Just filled up and now keeping an eye on the fuel gauge, hopefully it should improve.

I`ll keep ya posted.

Yeh but! Mine has bigger wheels and mud pluggers which will affect th mpg. never known any disco that does that mileage though. Heard it said but just never met anyone who has one.

hI there, re your tyres, you do know that having different size tyres can affect the gearing and more importantly the speedo and mileometer.

What size tyres are you running?

I replaced the standard wheels ans 230/70r16 tyres on my 200tdi disco with 265/75r16 BFG muds off my 110. I reckon the speedo etc now under reads by about 10%. Given that the fat mud tyres should reduce my fuel consumption a bit but that's offset by the bigger wheels making the gearing a bit taller I'm getting dead on 30mpg driving not too carefully. I reckon I could improve on that a bit if I took it a bit easier with the old right foot.

Hi Pinkhand, is the EGR valve blocked-off? I found this made a noticeable improvement in performance/economy.

Hi Hughesy, that sounds like a good result to me, getting 30mpg with muds on. I've just checked the difference the tyres make and according to the tyre calculator below, everyhting is reading under by 9.3%.

Just out of interest, how does this change affect the drive quality and did you have to do any mods to accomodate them?

They're very slightly more noisy but hardly noticeable. I've had to cut a bit off the front bumper end caps and a bit off the back of the rear arches but no suspension lift or anything else. They handle fine on the road, if anything they inspire a bit more confidence on the brakes than they did on my 110 perhaps due to the disco being a bit heavier. Obviously acceleration is a bit slower but still way better than my 110 with a 2.5td engine. The plan is to transplant the whole drivetrain from the disco into the 110 when I'm off work in the summer.

Hi hughesy, thanks for that.

I'm particularly interested in the fact that you intend to swap the running gear of the Disco into your one ten.

I am giving very serious thought to buying a series or a 90 and at some stage taking the oily bits out of my wife's Disco Tdi 200 and transposing them.

I'd be grateful if you could keep me in mind for updates on your progress when you do this work and any hitches you come across, that maybe I could/should plan to avoid:eek:

Cheers and good luck
Dave

There's loads on here and elswhere about the 200tdi disco engine into a 90/110. I'm also going to use the disco transfer box, as the one I've got is a bit knackered, maybe the gearbox, the front axle which should be a straight swap, and the disco back axle with disc brakes which isn't a straight swap for the salisbury on the 110 but I think I've got it figured out. I'm doing the chassis and bulkhead work on the 110 at the moment hoping to swap the rest over during the summer. Will have to do it as quick as poss as both vehicles will be in bits.
