I have a neighbor who has a problem with a rubber pipe leaking lots of oil into the air filter box - it connects from the Rocker cover to the air filter box on his ancient Diesel engine.
Frankly, he has a pile of poo, but it helps him get out of his hamlet and get the wood in for the winter ... I did suggest (since he hasn't) that he change the oil and filters as a start, but I'm no expert mechanic!

Sorry to be so vague, but any ideas what the problem may be?

Hi.

Sounds like it's the breather pipe......don't see how putting fresh oil will solve this prob, but it's a simple and good thing to do anyway. What would be good is to find out what engine and what reg so's everyone gets a fair idea.

Nick.

All he has for ID is:

It's a september 1988 VM engine?

TBH it's a bit of an old bus which he's happy with, and he's been trundling along with it as is, without an Oil change, for nearly 2yrs

However, if anyone has any tips based on no information at all I'm sure he'd be very grateful....:)

If it isn't pulling a huge amount through (read an article the other day on warranties and engine replacement in which apparently we would be lucky to get an engine replaced even if it was using up to a litre of oil p/1000 miles in a new car as that isn't considered excessive !!!!!!).......then i would change the oil, filter and air filter and just check it every so often along with all the grease points and other oils (diffs etc) as if he is just pottering it will more than lilely outlast us all.

Cheers, Nick.

Hi , I have a classic too, just wondered about the grease points as I have done all the other fluids. Is there anywhere in particular that needs greasing? I wondered about the Chrome Spheres on the front axel, do they have grease nipples? which is the best grease?

Hi there.

Propshafts.......as for the swivels there is a thing which is a one shot product for them....i am about to replace mine with some new ones as they are pitted and should not have passed the mot they just did (i think that they just tapped the rear lights with a toffee apple !!!!). Not sure of exact name, but if you look on various parts websites it will crop up or someone here will magic up the name. Where abouts are you?

Thanks mate I will, especailly if this autobox fix I have been talking about doesnt work as I only have enough cash to pay the guy once so I will need ideas!
