Morning all,

Now, I know that the fan on full blast in a Disco II can be a bit overwhelming at first but you get used to it after a couple of weeks.. however..

..Got in the car this morning, put the climate control to 21Deg and because it was quite chilly, the car (on Auto mode) put the fan speed up quite high once the engine was warming.

This is where I heard a really loud humming/buzzing noise alongside the fan sound. It really is loud, especially to be heard over the fan on full whack. I thought I'd found VTOL mode! If I turn the fan down manually to 1 or 2 bars on the display it goes away. But when I turn it up the buzzing/humming returns. The noise is coming from behind the dashboard, down towards the footwell (the sound seems to come out of the footwell vents, not the dash vents, if that makes sense?) It sounds like a bearing noise, or something trapped in the airflow?

Anyway, going to have to take a closer look this evening but does anyone have any general advice about accessing the heating system or whether in fact they have experienced this problem themselves? God, I hope it's not expensive :(

Thanks in advance.

My Disco II does the same, sounds like a Chinook on full power when the fan is going at max setting.

I thought it may be a clogged filter causing a vacuum but as far as I am aware, there is no pollen filter to change.

Either we have the same problem or this is normal:confused:

Had a similiar noise on my 1993, noise was only there when using warm mode (not often where I live) but silent when on air con mode (different fans). When a strip down was called for I found a mouse.......yes that's right a mouse trapped in the heating system. Unsure if he/she was a hamster in their last life and thought the heater motor fan was an excercise wheel but must have got the shock of thier life when asked to 'run' at 4000 rpm!!

regards

Dave

Good god! Hope that's not it!!

Interesting that you say there are two fans.. The 'extra' buzzing/humming noise is present for both cold and hot air, even on both ECON and AUTO modes. Which is now making me think that it might be a foreign body of some kind in one of the duct pipes? I can't see both fans developing a fault at exactly the same time?

I get the same thing, but I encourage it to clear itself by turning it up full bore and usually it is a leaf that has worked its way in through the vent system. The little buggars give off the sound of a helicopter but usually on the higher settings as the low settings dont 'exite' them as much.
Do you park near treees?

Well, this morning, it's turned into a flutter rather than a hum! So hopefully you're right, and whatever it is has decided to work its way out...

I'm just worried about the girl I give a lift to work having a fit if a dead mouse flies out of the vent at high speed whilst I'm trying to blow it out on full power! :D

I don't park near trees as such but there's definately the possibility of picking one up through driving around. Really hope it is just a leaf or something, saving me £££s ;)

My Spanish spec heating/air con are two independent units, bar a couple of connections at the fan switch/air con/recirc levers. The heater unit is the hamster exercise wheel type and so is the air con but enclosed in different housings is this just in my Spanish model? If anyone knows would be pleased too hear from them.
