Veggie oil

It got a bit exciting in here last night :rolleyes: Can I get back to me veggie oil ? Right then , Went out this morning and it started but took longer to crank before it fired.Seemed to idle ok. Drove round corner and stopped at junction , it stalled :eek: Luckily no-one behind me. Started but felt a bit hesitant on throttle. once warm it seemed fine. Should I try adding something to the mix to thin it. I dont want all that performance on a Monday morning in heavy traffic:doh:

Back on track-The only legal fuels allowed in your fuel tank if you are dipped by VOSA:
regular diesel-petrol-biofuel (biofuel encompasses ,biodiesel-veg oil.Each individual has a tax free limit of 2500 lts in any 12 month period-if you exceed this limit,duty is payable).
Any other solvents,paraffin,white spirit,red diesel are illegal and if caught,you will be fined heavily,and /or vehicle impounded.
All my friends that have been dipped on veg (vosa came out to their houses to do this!-nosey neighbours?)had no problem,once vosa realised it was veg and petrol in the tank-seems to be red diesel they are really after.One guy did dilute his veg with misfuel(from a boatyard,which had red diesel in it)Customs gave him a choice pay £750.00 on the spot or his vehicle will be removed to Dover-awaiting court proceedings-he will have to pay removal costs plus courts descision-he paid the £750.00 spot fine.
So if you stick to ,diesel,biodiesel,or veg and use petrol or diesel as a thinner you will have no problem-anything else is just not worth it

Have you checked the fuel filter and sedimenter?

Mine, when I first started using veg oil, used to clog up very easily for a while, so worth changing filters.
 
TD5 will be fine on veg oil. ran mine on it (25% mix) and all was ok (ran a bit better). stopped using it in Jan/feb due to the cold weather (made it smoke a bit on start up) but will be using it again now that the weather has warmed up (and dervs over £1.20 now)

Is there not sometimes an issue with excessive cranking relating to injector leak off pipes letting air into system???

Yup, but this wouldn't make it stop. I'd fix the stopping first, which might cure the starting too ... ;)

On the whole customs aren't worried about finding veg oil/bio in yer tank. If you are a commercial user/do a lot of mileage, it is well worthwhile keping receipts of all fuel used (both diesel and bio/svo). Although it's legal to use 2500litres they are within their right to ask you to prove your fuel useage.

I used to use 'pure' rapeseed oil in my 300tdi. It was 100% rapeseed with no anti-foaming agents. Most veg oils bought in supermarkets/cash and carrys these days contain anti-foaming agents. Unless I can find a cheap source that is 100% rapeseed I won't be putting any in my tank.

I use Tescos finest (cheapest) 100% rapeseed without foaming agents at 84p ish a litre. Wife found some at Lidl (or a n other of the cheap stores), box of 15 litres for about £7 .. but it's got emulsifiers in it so I don't think i can, or will, use it .. :(
