Hi all, so the freelander I've owned for less than a week is giving me issues.. from my own diagnostics I believe the bearings either side of the vcu are shot, I'm currently on paternity leave and waiting for the missus to drop so money is tight to say the least. Looking to have the prop removed and live with a front wheel drive hippo till cash flow improves in a few months. Although I can just about get under it to push and pull at stuff I don't have the room/competence to work. Would anyone happen to know of a garage north wales conwy area that will remove it for me? I've tried my local who refused to touch it.. by the way it's knocking itself silly while driving. Funnily enough it started after I put the correct tyre pressures in... thanks, Gaz

Are all the tyres the same make and model, not just same size? If some are less worn than others, are the less worn ones on the rear axle?

Worn VCU/prop support bearings probably won't result in knocking. Its more likely the front mount for the rear diff, but could be the support bearings if they are really trashed I suppose.

Have you tested the VCU? ...

Removing the props & vcu is not a to difficult task. There are bolts at either end (IRD & rear diff) and 4 bolts for the support bearings. Access to the bolts is easy if you have a bit of room under the car - eg drive it onto (solid!) blocks. Everything is quite heavy, so be careful, and lower the VCU on a jack after disconnecting the 2 ends.

If you remove the props, the car performs well - but you need to let your insurance company know and they may alter your premium. Its becoming a lottery as to whether it will pass a MOT these days as well.

All 4 tyres are toyo open country, the 2 front have significantly less tread than the rears. Thanks

The Toyo Open Country are supposed to be really good tyres - I'd fancy them on my truck if it drove a 4 wheels!

Be a bit careful though because there are differences in the Open Country range, they do an AT and AT2 I believe that are different tyres.
