Can anyone help

I was driving the freelander the other day, turned left and heard a bit of a knock and then a metal noise.
Called the AA, but whilst investigating could see a rubber ring hanging around the propshaft. On further investigation found out that this was the VCU damper. AA arrived and tried to split the shafts to allow me to get home, worked for an hour or so but ended up tie wrapping the VCU back together. Seemed to work a treat and I was able to get home BUT when I've checked since the VCU was lowered when he was trying to spilt the unit the Oil seal at the rear of the IRD is leaking.
My question are:
I know you can get a VCU damper repair kit (seen them on ebay) has anyone used one and are they any good (units quiet and seems fine other than the rubber damper had come off)
Second can the oil seal be repaired in the IRD?
any advice much appreciated

cheers
Tony :(

I had much the same problem but my damper was just hanging off and on the advice of a local garage I cut mine off with an angle grinder .. the damper outer part is half inch thick steel. However, since then I have the most awful 'growl' noise from the transmission and I am trying to sort this out now. I too would appreciate some advice. I know this doesn't help you Tony but I thought this was a good time to air my problem

You'll need to find the source of the noise. Remove the props and vcu and spin the vcu bearings/mounts listening for the noise.

Soak the VCU splines in penetrating oil to enable eventual 'splitting' of front and rear propshafts from the VCU assembly.

Thanks for your reply re the bearings which I omitted to mention I had replaced about a year ago. The damper was OK then but was found to be hanging off in November when the car was in for an MOT. I do not do a lot of mileage and would be surprised if they had gone already. Cheers.

Hi chaps realise this is a really old thread, but I have a V6 freelander auto with some serious vibration. Garage tells me its the propshaft donut gone but they cant get hold of one.
Two sizes 150mm and 176mm anyone know which one fits the V6. Think this is also known as the damper. Other threads give the impression there isn't a vibration damper on the v6.....any help much appreciated

Other members have removed the damper/donut with no reported problems, not tried myself as fitted a recon VCU but may be worth a try.
