Ive decided to change my VCU for a new GKN one from a local parts dealer - this comes with bearings.

Reason for changing this is my car has done 90k miles now and dont want to take the chance of existing VCU causing damage.

I havent changed one before is this a straight forward job and what tools are required?

cheers all

Dave

All pretty straight forward to do. Follow the the threads here. If you getting new support bearings, that's make it easier. Otherwise you might need a puller to remove them. Make sure to have some else to help lower the prop when under the car or use a jack to support it. Did mine two weeks ago. All ok now.

Good luck

Can I ask where you are sourcing your VCU and bearings from and how much please? I'm thinking I should do mine sometime soon ;-)

well Im either going to buy them from Island 4x4 who are fairly local for me so I can collect
Viscous Coupling and Bearings TOR000010G x1 TOQ000040R x2 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.
or
Take my wife away on her birthday to a hotel in Bewdley and while there get Bell Engineering to do the job for me. Theyve quoted £300 for VCU plus bearings fitted while I wait. Just a bit of a journey from where I live in Kent.
decisions decisions :)

Island sell Britpart crap so beware & ask who makes the parts you want before you buy.

so does every one else ,britpart do genuine vcu and brgs ,its only some of their pattern stuff as other wholesalers pattern stuff thats poor not their genuine or oe or branded parts

Well Island clearly state where there parts are sourced and as I said the part Im looking at from them is a genuine GKN part.

As I said before if I buy the part from Island 4x4 then it will be collected by me - Ive visited them on a few occasions and TBH service has been great.

Only Britpart I have bought so far for my Freelander was a pollen filter from another supplier and I totally agree it was sh*te

Apart from that looks like Im visiting Bell Engineering in September :)

Quick update - went to Austen (Bell Engineering) yesterday and had my VCU replaced. Great, super fast job, thanks Austen. The car feels so different now, in a good way of course :)
