Was just wondering really,is the v8 in the discovery 2 the same as the engine they call the 4.0 in the rangerover p38.I've read all kinds of horror storys regarding overheating + liners moving on the rangerovers and was wondering if the disco had the same problem or even the same engine?

its essentially the same, its the v8 block, in the p38 there is no distributer so the front cover is different to the disco. but all the main parts of the engine is the same and can/will suffer the same problems however its debateable whether good maintenance regimes can overcome the poor(?) design/build quality!

The so called 4.0 fitted to the disco2 is the same as the P38 4.0 'Thor' engine and both don't have a distributor but coil packs both are 3.947cc the same as the previous 3.9 'Tempest engine'.
I believe it was the 4.2 and 4.6 engines that had the most problems although the 3.5 and 3.9 V8's can still suffer from overheating if your unluckly.

There are detail differences between early and late engines, specifically the locating plate for the engine flywheel pickup.

Other than that, we have just fitted an early 4.0 cross-bolted new short engine to a later 1999 Disco, and apart from that one issue, everything else transferred OK and it's on the road this week.

Water levels are critical and must be kept up to scratch, as should the coolant which is 50/50 water and OAT type antifreeze.
