V8i fuel pump removal - pump stuck

Hi guys,

Been a while, but now got some time to fix my long over due problem with my fuel pump. At least that is what I suspect.

My Disco 1 V8i has now, for many years, run on 3/4 tank. As soon as the tank capacity gets to 1/4, fuel starvation plays up. I have explored many solutions over the years, but none fruitful. Someone has suggested to me that it could be cr*p building up in the bottom of the pump's fuel filter.

Not wanting to go that route, in fear of getting into more trouble, I now think the moment has come. But I have ran into the first trouble (2nd really cause while unscrewing the fuel lines they twisted tremendously, which I think was not the way to do it, but anyway they are off)

So my trouble now is : Pump won't unscrew. As I tend to be a bit heavy handed sometimes I stopped and looked for the LST131 tool that Haynes recommended. Bearmach does not do it.

Finally my question :

1- Has anybody got an advise how to unscrew this stuck pump without breaking it ?

2- It is anti-clock, not like gas, is it ?

1: As far as I know the arrangement is the same on RRC so IIRC the plastic locking ring can be a bit tight. Carefully use a suitable drift of some sort against the ridges on the locking ring ( I think I used a blunt chisel or a big flat blade screwdriver - but a small piece of wood may do), then tap with a hammer to spin it off. Once it is cracked it should unscrew by hand. Putting it back on is the reverse of removal i.e. do it by hand then gently tap with a hammer and drift to lock and firmly seal.

2: I am a bit fuzzy on this as it has been a few years but I don't think it is anti-clock, just a normal right hand thread.

Tried to tap it around with stone chisel.

Will try a bit "heavier" now I know it can take it.

(Think its never been off in 22 years.)

Well got it sorted.

Post some pics.

A stone chisel and a firm tap with a lump hammer did the trick. Once the red plastic ring moved it came loose. From there it was not too difficult. I cleaned the filter and the cup it is in. Note the fuel level float and pot-meter.
Putting it back together I loosened the torq screws so I could fit the filter back in its slot. Gently maneuvred the pump back in the tank. To avoid twist in my petrol hoses I cut both and inserted old metal petrol line inside. Put all together (loose) but last fastened the clamps on the hose.

Have to wait until tannk is 1/4 to see if it sorted my problem.

Glad you got it sorted. Not so bad really, it's just a case of taking that brave pill as you hit the plastic ring with a bit of metal wondering if it will come undone or just break!
