Derv engine going to have much better low down grunt.
Someone mentioned autos off road, autos off road are good, a lot of challange cars have them. I myself would probably always pick the manual box, but the autos are pretty damn good offroad, not going to stall it - you can still lock it in 1 and 2 for rock crawling etc... low box, locked in 1st on an auto is pretty damn good.

as I discovered fairly recently though even locked in low 1st an auto box will not slow a car anywhere near as well as the manual.. so hill descent is a little more challenging.

A Gaylander with HDC.... that would be about right, no offroad skill required.

I just brought a V8 and its the best thing ever done i've been in my friends 300tdi also a 2.5td 110 and my v8 is better just because of the noise, also went down a land in low range 3rd and the power was amazing much better than any old oily noisy diesel
