3.5 is the best but is under powered for the size of motor finding a good classic not full of rust is now becoming very hard.
the 4.2 started all the porus issues off as it came with lambdas fitted and cats. some 3.9 in the disco1 and late classics have the same problem again with catts and lambdas fitted.
p38a are no cheap and plentyfull dont suffer rot like a disco or classic and as stated do have block issues more so if fitted with mono point gas for some reason?
sofar this year i have rebuilt 12 engines and have 3 on the go for this month alone! only 5 have been pure petrol engines the rest were on gas!

as regardes the urban lengend status of porus blocks very untrue if you want to by a p38a v8 buy one get a 4.6 get all the toys you want then irontite the block and you should be ok i now offer this with every engine i do as we all know the top hat linnering is not a 100% cure for porosity only the slipped linner issue which is a spereate issue to the porus block problem which most engine builders will tell you is one of the same!

what was the cause of that happening? what year did they solve it?

I have a pre 76 landrover 3.5 v8 in my 72 rrc, I think its about 74 vintage as its a genuine landrover replacement engine and it must have the post 74 rear crankshaft seal as it ist leaking lol but it does have the pre 76 style dizzy drive/oil pump.
It was the pre 76 motors that tended to do it, but usually occurs when rev it a bit hard.

My opinion is that it is an urban legend insofar as they are prone to porosity and slipped liners.
The Rover V8 in all capacities is prone to issues if not maintained.
Most of the fooked rovers are sold on after they have been roasted hence the bad name.
I stand by my argument that these engines are very reliable if the oil is dropped every 3000 miles and a good multigrade is used.
The coolant should be flushed and changed every year (correct type used for ali)

You only ever hear about the bad ones, and they have always been cooked due to neglect.
Don't believe the ****e that goes around about the trusty RV8.
My tuppence :D
