I think you will find they are 3/8 UNC which is a 9/16 A/F spanner. Remove the engine rubber mounts, and that will allow you to lower the engine on a jack which will give you more room. An obstruction ring spanner is useful, they are shaped like an "S" or sometimes curved. Leave the exhaust manifolds on as the heat shields are a right pain to get off in situ-even if you manage to remove them, the rear manifold nuts are ****e to get at.
The V8 is a mix of metric and Unified threads which is confusing to say the least. Suggest you also get new exhaust manifold to downpipe studs which are M10 for when you do the refit as they are prone to breaking when they are retightened-get stainless if you can and brass nuts-total of 6 required.
