All,

Am in the middle of replacing the front wheel barings, front left all apart fine!

I started removing the right front caliper but the bottom retaining nut has sheered, luckily I still have 5 threads which have come out and the sheer is still in the caliper mounting so there is no movement on the caliper, I am happy with thread lock this will hold fine. The top retaining bolt is also welded in - slight movement but again feel like twisting metal not threads turning... what the **** should I do.

The outer bearing is dissintigrated but is it worth just replacing this and praying the inner one is OK for the time being - I know not ideal...

Break the caliper down in situ? so I can slide the hub off - is this possible?

or risk thrying to remove the top retaining nut... but I suspect if that sheers I would have to replace all the swivel housing??

Any help gratefully recieved

You can't take a risk like that with brakes, those two bolts must be spot on, try some heat on the other bolt if that fails snap it off then remove the caliper/ hub , if you can't remove the broken bolts yourself try a machine shop .

Yeah you cant take chances on caliper bolts i have seen what happens when you do! Have a think about how much stress those 2 bolts are under during heavy braking. Fine when they are tight but when things are slightly loose that play will eventually cause failure with potentially lethal consequences.
Strip it all off and get it sorted properly, even if you have to find a replacement swivel housing and some new bolts. Then you can do your inner bearing too which will more than likely be worse then the outer one.
I did my rear ones yesterday and the inner bearing had siezed on the stub axle so you never know!
