Ok

I cannot get the oil filler undone. Is there any other way of filling the ird?

Besides tipping the car over and filling it from the drain plug.

One assumes this is why the advice on the forum is to check the fill plug moves before undoing the drain plug?

Use a chissel to try to undo it. apply the chissel to turn the plug anti clock wise. Thats what I did when mine was rounded off. Failing that weld something to the filler plug to allow you to undo it. Be careful as the ird walls are thin and could be distorted easily with heat. I now keep a spare just incase. Lots of peeps have made this mistake.

Its a 19mm head .I had the same problem last year.I totally ****ed the head of the nut, made **** of it.I ended up heating a 17mm socket with my dads gas torch till it was red hot, then I fixed on an old 9" extension, and tapped it onto the nut using my lump hammer .When it cooled a minute or 2 later I had a very tight hold on the nut.
This method will work.
I cant remember if I used a 4" and a 3" aswell .Just have everything ready and worked ou before you heat the socket.

I must have been lucky with mine then, i just used a decent fit socket biggest bar i could fit and it came undo first time. I wish filling the IRD up had been easier, i made a right mess of that.

You can get an excellent little socket set by "Irwin"

they have a selection of 4 extractor sockets covering metric and imperial which have a helical cutting edge inside the socket that bites into the bolt/nut as you try undo it

I was so impressed I went on and bought the remaining sockets to make up the full kit and they have always worked perfectly on the most rounded and rusted nuts/bolts

Slight correction - there are 5 sockets in the "base" set and a further 5 available to top up the set.

I strongly recommend these, here is a link:-
